AI is “reducing the cost, time, and effort required by authoritarian actors to both mass-produce and disseminate manipulative content with the aim of smearing opponents and promoting allies, exacerbating divisions in democratic societies.” The International Forum for Democratic Studies report "Manufacturing Deceit: How Generative AI Supercharges Information Manipulation" by Beatriz Saab was quoted by The Washington Post Editorial Board. https://lnkd.in/gbNpuAh6

More than AI and foreign influence, the top concern for US voters around misinformation is –- *drum roll* -- lying politicians. "It's like, 'The call is coming from inside the house,'" said pollster John Gerzema. "In past elections, there was always fear of misinformation and election interference coming from abroad. But here we see the most likely source of concern is America's own politicians spreading misinformation." According to his survey ahead of the November 5 presidential election, 51% of Americans identified politicians spreading falsehoods as their top concern regarding misinformation. Some 35% named AI, and 30% foreign governments spreading misinformation. A flood of photorealistic AI-generated fake images on social media has unleashed what researchers call the "deep doubt" era — a new age of skepticism that has diminished online trust. Growing fears about the power of generative AI tools have given politicians a handy incentive to cast doubt about the authenticity of real content — a tactic popularly dubbed as the "liar's dividend." Voters saw that play out in August when Republican nominee Donald Trump falsely accused his Democratic rival Kamala Harris of using AI technology to manipulate a Michigan campaign rally photo to project a larger crowd size. That claim was easily disproved by photos and videos from journalists who were present at the rally, as well as digital forensics experts who told AFP's fact-checkers that the image in question did not carry signs of AI manipulation. In an era where information is readily accessible and the internet is a primary source of news for millions, the manipulation of facts has become increasingly sophisticated. Russia has harnessed the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform this digital landscape into a battleground for propaganda. The rapid creation and dissemination of fake news have become a significant challenge, raising the question: how can the world combat this onslaught of misinformation and bot-generated comments? Christopher Nolan’s film “The Prestige” opens with a monologue about magic tricks, describing them in three acts: the Pledge, the Turn, and the Prestige. This analogy surprisingly fits the methodology of Russian propaganda. Much like a magician, Russia uses AI to create illusions, turning mundane pieces of information into deceptive narratives that captivate and mislead the global audience. By utilising AI, Russian propagandists can generate convincing fake news that spreads like wildfire across social media platforms in a matter of hours. #EUToday #AI

This one's worth a read. Particularly for anyone interested in generative AI, the news business, or search engines. An UN newly released report said that AI ONLY benefits small amount of states, companies and individuals. In a more accurate human language in English, it should be that some human are using AI to harm others and thus, make big money. So UN had made a wise decision. AI is based on math models derived by some smart people. Using math models to simulate a physical process started from the Manhattan Project in World War II for nuclear bomb design. Today's AI was originally from the military C4ISR. Its original missions were just breaching enemy's security, misinformation, cognitive manipulation, cheat, surveillance, etc.. We can imagine using AI to do many things, but NOT to make love, nor to answer the following multilingual questions of market intelligence: "Who, in the Ontario province of Canada, has new US patents granted on the nearest Tuesday, when the USPTO releases the newly granted US patents on a weekly basis?" "Who, in the "江蘇‘’ province of China, has new US patents granted on the nearest Tuesday, when the USPTO releases the newly granted US patents on a weekly basis?" With our intellectual property (IP), we can answer. Do you or any of your contacts need our expertise and our IP? We're selling, NOT just talking. Thanks.
This might be semantics but the UN thinks AI is an it. "all 193 members of the United Nations General Assembly have spoken in one voice, and together, chosen to govern artificial intelligence rather than let it govern us" That worries me, the level of understanding about a computer system. https://lnkd.in/dRHRZQNN

A chilling assessment from US intelligence agencies warns of the potential for adversaries to leverage advanced AI capabilities like deepfakes and synthetic media to amplify election interference efforts. This threat underscores the urgent need for robust countermeasures and collaboration across sectors to protect the integrity of our democratic processes. The agencies express grave concerns about the rapid progress of AI, outpacing our ability to detect and attribute these emerging threats. Foreign actors could exploit AI to create deceptive narratives, manipulate media, impersonate individuals, and automate disinformation campaigns at an unprecedented scale, undermining public trust. As AI tools become more accessible and synthetic media increasingly sophisticated, we must enhance our defenses against AI-enabled foreign influence operations. This requires a concerted effort from the government, tech companies, and civil society to develop robust detection capabilities, fortify resilience, and raise awareness about these evolving threats. Safeguarding the integrity of our elections is paramount. It is our collective responsibility to stay vigilant and proactive in addressing the challenges posed by the malicious use of AI technologies. Let us engage in constructive dialogue and take decisive action to protect the cornerstone of our democracy. #AI #ElectionIntegrity #Disinformation #NationalSecurity #Democracy Read the Full Article: https://lnkd.in/giCajc9c

Indeed, probably only a #UN resolution was missing in the resent host of declarations, calls for action and commitment around #ai. if anything, it’s a definite recognition of the planetary size of the phenomenon, possibly finally beyond pure hype. And, as history has shown before, a sign of a huge potential, which, paradoxically, can be most successfully exploited to the maximum when as many as possible world nations are committed to a defined and capped scope of its exploitation. Thinking of the scale of military use of AI already in place. The beauty of soft law.
