Agritourism activities are becoming an important component of many farm operations. These activities have the potential to increase farm revenues and maintain the sustainability of the industry. However, agritourism activities won’t suit every farm or farmer. Before starting an agritourism operation, it is recommended that farmers spend some time assessing the potential that these activities have for their business and carefully planning the financial elements of their strategy. Keeping in mind these factors, Fin-wiser Advisory has developed a robust Business Plan Model –Agri Tourism. It is a useful financial planning tool, whatever size, and stage of development your business is. Could agritourism be a catalyst for shifting to patterns of sustainable consumption and production? 🌽 Agritourism is a form of tourism that involves visiting farms and other agricultural enterprises to engage in rural experiences, learn about agricultural practices and participate in recreational activities. It holds the potential to offer a unique opportunity to contribute to sustainable consumption and production (SCP). By promoting local food systems, reducing food miles, and preserving traditional farming practices, agritourism is well aligned directly with #SDG12. Learn more about a recent UN Environment Programme & FAO SFS-MED dialogue, that brought together government representatives to discuss how #agritourism can act as a key enabler to sustainable food systems and contribute to #SDG12. ➡ https://lnkd.in/esSqgp7d

It is great to see this work evolve under your leadership Carla Barbieri and also the many minds from around the globe contributing to the discussion. The primacy of agriculture needs to be front and centre in agritourism. This is critical because as we work to advocate for new policies, programs, laws and regulations to support agritourism, we must ensure that agriculture is not compromised by the tourism activity. And that real farming families are able to offer authentic agritourism in a way that compliments their core farming business. The world is losing our food production lands to development at an extraordinary rate. Defining agritourism in a way that ensures the tourism experience remains an ancillary activity to primary production is vital to protect farm land and farming communities. Without a definition, that clearly expresses what agritourism is and importantly what it is not, is very important, without it we cannot advocate for reforms that will support the growth of the sector.
What does Agritourism exactly mean? The Definitions and Standards Committee of the Global Agritourism Network led by Prof. Carla Barbieri has been working to find an answer to this question. https://lnkd.in/d-Xm_fRX

In the Mood for Some Ivory Tower Agro-Thinking? #agrotourism #conservation #sustainability #agriculture Here is an academic article on agro-tourism: how it can promote agro-conservation goals, yet be very susceptible to the vicissitudes of the markets... https://lnkd.in/g94qdg5b Quote: "... we find that the potential of agritourism to act as a sustainable means to environmental conservation must be considered in relation not only to the risk of overexploitation, or more subtle forms of subversion inherent in tourism, but also to the impossibility of remaining outside of the influence of market forces. In other words, agritourism illustrates intertwining human and natural systems with promising conservation value potential, but one that must itself be understood as subject to the subversive influence of markets."
