On July 9, 2024, President Biden signed into law the Fire Grants and Safety Act (S.870). Specifically, this bill: · Reauthorizes the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant programs through fiscal year 2028, · Reauthorizes the U.S. Fire Administration through fiscal year 2028, and · Extends the sunset date for AFG and SAFER to September 30, 2030. #disasterpreparedness #firepreparedness #firesafety #firegrants #grants #USFA #FEMA #AFG #SAFER Learn more here:

The article sheds light on the deplorable living conditions endured by service members in military barracks. The US Government Accountability Office conducted an investigation across 12 military installations and found a range of issues. Some of the major problems identified include the presence of pests like bedbugs and roaches, poor water quality (with some reporting brown water that was unsafe to drink), security deficiencies leading to squatters occupying barracks, and inadequate ventilation and air conditioning, particularly in hot and humid areas. The report reveals a lack of oversight and accountability at the leadership level, with the Pentagon failing to address these issues effectively. As a result, service members, including the most vulnerable ones, have been left to cope with these substandard conditions on their own. It is estimated that thousands of service members are affected by these conditions. Instances of poor barracks conditions have been reported in the past, with some gaining attention on social media and through media coverage. However, the lack of concerted action and responsibility has perpetuated the problem. As professionals, it is important to be aware of the challenges faced by our servicemen and servicewomen and to advocate for their well-being. 🗓️ Earlier this month our Leicestershire Police negotiators teamed up with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service to plan, arrange and deliver a negotiation input to our Fire & Rescue teams. This is due to on occasion, our Leicestershire firefighters will find themselves in situations where they need to communicate with people in crisis until the Police and Negotiators are in attendance. 🧑🏫 The training consists of a Presentation designed for them which is similar to the first responder inputs we deliver to our uniform colleagues, to provide them with some awareness of persons in crisis and some do’s and don’ts and advise when talking to them. ✅ Following this there will be three realistic scenarios for the Leicester Fire and Rescue Service to put what they have learned into practice. 🚒 It is key responsibility for us as Police Force to support our fellow Blue Light teams with training and resources where possible to ensure our communities are kept safe from harm. #TeamLeicestershire
