More than 85% of health systems plan to increase their 2024 digital and IT budgets, according to a recent report from Guidehouse. One of the top investment priorities reported is EHR modernization, a theme near and dear to our heart given the outdated, document-based process of accessing external medical information even with the most innovative of EHRs. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), released the draft 2024-2030 Federal Health IT Strategic Plan. Public comments are welcome until May 28th. Key Points: - The plan outlines federal goals to improve access to health data, promote equitable healthcare delivery, and strengthen public health data infrastructure. - It emphasizes policies and technologies to support diverse health IT user needs. - The plan aligns with the recent Health Data, Technology, and Interoperability (HTI-1) rule to increase transparency and equity in electronic health information (EHI) access and use. - It complements the HHS Health Care Sector Cybersecurity concept paper and voluntary Cybersecurity Performance Goals (CPGs) to enhance cybersecurity in healthcare organizations. It should not take a crisis to bring change. The point of disrupting the status quo is evolution. What the cyberattacks on Change Healthcare should create is foresight on future status quo bias disruption. No one system crisis should cause this much devastation to the operations of healthcare/revenue cycle. Where are the contingency plans? Like we learned with COVID-19, there are no plans in place.
