With Congress considering a possible reauthorization of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) the NGA Task Force on Education, Workforce, and Community Investment held a virtual briefing this month for House and Senate congressional staff to hear from Governors’ offices about how WIOA is working, where it might be falling short, and what Congress should consider in a potential reauthorization. Recognizing that school districts employ an important segment of the workforce, especially in rural communities, I love the work our team does to connect district employers with funding and processes that can be used to upskill the educator workforce. Strong school systems are the foundation for everything else. This bill "Prioritizes employer-led initiatives that equip workers with the skill sets to fill jobs in critical industries and help the currently employed workforce upskill to avoid displacement and advance their careers." #teacherapprenticeship #growyourown #TNGYOC
🤝 Today, with broad bipartisan support (378-26 vote), the House passed H.R. 6655, A Stronger Workforce for America Act. 🛠️ This bill makes critical improvements to the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), the nation’s signature federal workforce investment. The legislation still needs to make its way through the Senate (and needs a Senate champion), but this is a big win! 👏 Kudos to House Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Ranking Member Bobby Scott (D-VA) for their leadership on this important legislation! #WIOA #workforce #bipartisanship #Congress

#WIOA is the primary law that establishes our nation’s public workforce system. Congress must get reauthorization legislation right to meet the needs of working people, advance racial equity, and engage employers to provide pathways to quality jobs so that everyone can thrive. In a new blog today, National Skills Coalition and the National Fund for Workforce Solutions share what they seek in reauthorization legislation. https://lnkd.in/eQ7tnNCH

The Tomorrow’s Workforce Coalition was formed to build support for the bipartisan, bicameral Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act. The bill would expand qualified expenses under 529 savings plans to include postsecondary training & credentialing, such as licenses & professional certifications – offering valuable tax-advantaged resources for anyone, with or without a college degree, who pursues career growth, mid-career changes or pathways that diverge from a typical academic route. Tomorrow, the Coalition will deliver its sign-on letter to Congress to advocate directly for this beneficial workforce & economic development policy – which would benefit EVERY sector of the economy. More than 650 member organizations have joined the cause. Will YOU help invest in tomorrow’s workforce too? As a member of Tomorrow’s Workforce Coalition, ISSA is advocating for economic development policy that would strengthen the workforce now and, in the future, the Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow's Workforce Act (S. 722/H.R. 1477). This bipartisan legislation would expand qualified expenses under 529 savings plans to include postsecondary training and credentialing programs, including cleaning credentials like ISSA’s Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS). It would provide valuable tax-advantaged resources to more workers pursuing career growth, mid-career changes, or alternative career paths. In an effort to tackle talent scarcity, companies are renewing efforts to attract and retain workers 55 and older. Not only do they have more experience than younger employees, but they also represent a massive talent pool from which employers can recruit from 💡 Yet older workers may require certain accommodations to suit their changing needs. Here's how companies can attract and retain this talent pool 💭👇🏽 #GreatUnretirement #Talent #TalentScarcity

1moSome of us have worked very hard with governors to get groundbreaking demonstration authority within WIOA that would allow states the most flexibility provided since WIA passage in 1998. This should be a top priority for NGA, and I hope as we move forward in conference that NGA could be more explicit in its support and advocacy for such authority, which will change the entire paradigm.
