https://lnkd.in/ewUY_r8V The WA State COVID-19 Pandemic After Action Review Task Force is complete and available for public review. This task force was commissioned by the Washington State Legislature to conduct a review of the state response activities while documenting the disparate impacts across racial, economic, cultural and geographical communities and to provide recommendations for the future. I was honored to have been appointed to this task force by Gov Inslee and to have worked with so many dedicated people during the process. I learned a great deal and hope this report will help future emergency responses. Some of the key takeaways: • Continue to build on the relationships the state created during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially between emergency management and public health. • Identify sustainable state funding that can continue successful initiatives the state implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. These initiatives often supported communities in need. • Address the disparities that COVID-19 highlighted and integrate them into future emergency planning for response and recovery. This work must be applicable to all hazards for our state to prepare for, identify, and respond to the needs of all communities in a more equitable and sensitive manner. • Integrate response equity strategies that support all communities across each phase of emergency management planning. • Invest in community collaboration opportunities that engage vulnerable and underserved communities so that we further expand the “Whole of Community” planning philosophy #publichealth #covid

A chilling new report from Trust for America's Health about the continuing gaps in our preparedness for emergencies. States are unevenly resourced and some lack key policies that would protect the public. The report also paints a frightening picture of what we might expect as climate-related emergencies increase. And as the COVID money runs out there will be more and more deficiencies. Do we have to wait for the next major emergency to plug the holes? Only paying attention when an emergency occurs leads to illness, injury and death that could have been prevented.
