John Wooden was a monumental figure for UCLA Basketball and the entire Bruin community. The wisdom he instilled in a generation of players continues to reflect the spirit of excellence found throughout campus today.
Do you have an enemy? You should.
In my experience, a team benefits from having an “enemy” as it helps to elevate its game.
Take college football, for example. Why do we love college football? Is it the pageantry? Is it the nostalgia of being back on campus? Is it the ability to bring people together at a tailgate? It’s probably all those things, but at it’s true core, it’s the ability to be a winner that excites most.
As a leader, I think it is healthy to find an enemy. Through the years, in my world of law and firm growth, the enemy has ranged from the outdated law practice industry to certain competitors to individual complacency. Competition is an amazing motivator, and it feels great to rally around that as a team in an effort to be a winner.
I want to be surrounded by people who play hard, play fair, and play to win.
This picture is from a tailgate we hosted in East Lansing last weekend. The Spartans won. I got there at 7AM before anyone else because I was so excited.

Inviting those who live, work and play in Syracuse to fund THREE safe clubs with caring adult mentors, fun and friendship, and high-impact youth development programs and activities for those who need our help the most.
Seems like the Leatherstocking Council, BSA can always count on the Oneonta, NY Daily Star to cover our events! Front page placement for our Eagle Scout recognition dinner every January is certainly something the Scouting community truly appreciates. This article does a nice job of highlighting several of last year's community service projects for their readers.

Love this from the Fairfield University women's hoops crew.
Reminiscent of the ad posting Topgolf put out into the world after Tiger Woods' official split from Nike in terms of its simplicity and "old school" feel.
It's a good reminder.
PR doesn't have to be expensive.
Creating buzz doesn't always mean an event.
High production costs aren't necessarily a pre-requisite.
Sometimes, you just need to be a little clever in delivering the message.
Well done, Stags. Go get that ranking.

Fairfield University Women’s Basketball is on a 24-game winning streak and has only lost one game this season.
However, the school was still seeking its first-ever ranking in the AP or USA Today Top 25.
So, they created their own resumé.
Now, for the first time in program history, the Stags are ranked in a national poll—coming in at #25.
The concept this week. You don’t need luck; you need to do your best. As a football fan, I always look forward to the upset victories. Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals have made it increasingly difficult for smaller colleges to compete with the traditional powerhouses in the current college football landscape. Insert Northern Illinois’ upset victory over #5 Notre Dame.
Notre Dame paid NIU almost 1.5 Million dollars to play them in South Bend, under the pretense that they would win big. As the number 5 ranked college football program in the country, Notre Dame was favored to win by four touchdowns against NIU. Last week, Notre Dame beat nationally ranked Texas A&M in College Station, and everyone believed that the Fighting Irish were on their way to the College Football Playoffs. Not so fast, my friends (Lee Corso Voice).
NIU’s starters were primarily juniors and seniors who had been in the program for a long time. They know exactly what’s required; they have 10k+ hours in the program. After NIU beat ND, the post-game reporter asked the NIU head coach, Thomas Hammond, what he shared with the team to inspire them to win. Hammond responded, “I told my team we didn’t need luck; we just needed our best.”
Don’t bet on luck this week if you don’t have to. Trust and believe in your best. Believing and obsessing about improving your best helps you avoid being outcome-oriented, keeps you present, and helps you progress towards that ‘big opportunity’.
Look at this post-game interview! I love College Football for this reason.

John Carroll University's momentum continues with a new era for athletics: The Blue Streaks will join the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) in Fall 2025.
“At John Carroll, students can pursue excellence in the classroom and on the playing field without sacrificing one for the other,” said Director of Athletics Brian Polian ‘97. “We work everyday to attract the type of student who wants an exceptional Jesuit education and who wants to compete at the highest level of Division III athletics. We believe that joining the NCAC aligns John Carroll with peer institutions that share a common mission and that attract students from across the country.”

Big news with a big takeaway.
The "greats" are called great for a reason. Aspire to reach (and excede) the same heights.
But in just about all professions, the greats won't always be in play, so to speak. They will step down, retire, or reposition, creating a vacuum in your industry.
Are you ready to step in?
Make decisions today that put you in line to be one of the next "greats" of your trade.
One of the winningest coaches ever.
One of the longest-tenured coaches ever.
The highest-paid college football coach ever.
Nick Saban is retiring, per ESPN.
