Thank you to drivers who used alternative routes or avoided travel over the weekend during the M25 closure, meaning traffic was reduced in the area. We appreciate your patience during these works. We made good progress this weekend, and we were able to open the M25 seven hours earlier than initially planned. We installed a bridge and two overhead gantries as part of ongoing work to make journeys safer and reduce pollution.

Entirely my own personal opinion, but the issue here isn't that it's unprecedented, it's that it sets a serious new precedent. You'd have thought decisions to close major arteries would be taken as a very last resort, and this one may well have been, but it seems to be increasingly more common. Twenty years ago major road closures were very uncommon, and closing a motorway was newsworthy, but now it seems almost routine.
