Twenty years ago today, ten countries joined the European Union in the biggest enlargement of the EU bloc to date. New analysis from ACI EUROPE points to the benefits of enlargement for air connectivity driving societal and economic cohesion 🌍✈️. Joining the EU played a pivotal role in the growth of air travel in these accession countries – with the period after EU enlargement marked by continued convergence on the back of better air connectivity and growing demand for air travel. According to ACI EUROPE’s Connectivity Index, direct air connectivity of the 10 accession countries has surged by +85%, while the number of air travellers grew by +215% since accession. Olivier Jankovec, ACI EUROPE Director General commented: “The positive track record of the 2004 enlargement is particularly relevant in the context of today’s challenging geopolitical environment which has given impetus to a new wave of EU enlargement. The data we share today is a positive signal for the 9 candidate countries and indeed for the EU bloc as a whole as it eyes further expansion. 🛌 📊 Statistics Norway SSB has published figures for July showing 6.6 million overnight stays at commercial accommodation. 📈 ☀ As before the pandemic, Germany is the largest, and reigns supreme with a share of 24 percent. This is followed by the Netherlands (11%), Sweden (10%) and the USA (8%). Together, these four markets represent 53 per cent of all foreign overnight stays. Compared to July 2019, there is good growth from both Germany (6%), the Netherlands (14%), Sweden (6%), the USA (10 %), Denmark (26%), France (6%), Switzerland (32%), Great Britain (2%) and Belgium (33%). It would be great to understand the real reasons for the state of trans-European railways. I am travelling from Paris to Budapest today. The first connection at Mannheim was over 70 minutes delayed. Then another delay of over an hour on the train getting to Vienna. (Meanwhile I noticed that the ICE10 from Frankfurt to Brussels had been cancelled again.) And now the train to Budapest is 70 minutes delayed and counting. On the one hand it’s a luxury problem we shouldn’t make a fuss about. There’s a lot worse going on than being two or three hours late across a day. And you can keep yourself busy and meet people. It’s ok. But on the other hand if the EU wants to get people off flying, then they need to show they can run railways. People need to know the trains are reliable if they are to give up flying. It would be great if some railway experts could explain what’s really going wrong. It might just be too many people trying to travel too much and we should reduce our expectations. #obb #db #delays #patience #perspective

Sure enough, total transatlantic bizjet flights from the US to Europe are up by 5% this month, and into France up by 26%. 🏖 We’d expect the high-end tourist demand to be a strong stimulus for the European charter market, lifting a sector which has otherwise sagged this year. As I wait for my ICE (German High-speed Train) connection from Frankfurt Airport 🇩🇪 to Basel, Switzerland 🇨🇭, which is already delayed by more than 20 minutes ⏳, I can't help but reflect on the current state of "German quality." To my surprise, only one train is on time out of twelve 🚄, while another has a delay of over 4 hours ⏰ and two have already been canceled ❌. In the Deutsche Bahn, I noticed familiar faces—my friend from a month ago, a little mouse 🐭, and a coffee machine that is, unfortunately, out of service ☕️. These experiences challenge the long-held perception of impeccable German efficiency and quality. It's a stark reminder that even the most reliable systems can face significant challenges. As we navigate these disruptions, it’s crucial to address these issues to restore the high standards that travelers have come to expect.
