💡 #DidYouKnow that, unlike free K-12 public education, early childhood education and pre-K programs are funded by a mix of local, federal, and state programs that allow them to be free for low-income families. 💡 That includes: ➡️ federally funded Head Start programs, ➡️ state-funded pre-K in public schools, ➡️ state-funded child care center seats, and ➡️ New Orleans’ newly expanded City Seats program funded through a new voter-approved tax millage.
These barriers stop New Orleans kids from getting early childhood education, new report says

The greatest cost driver in high-quality preschool education programs is labor. Wages and benefits comprise up to 80% of cost. This insight highlights the critical need for conversations about adequate and fair compensation to address the budget implications. Pre-K education in America is at a turning point, write the authors from the National Institute for Early Education Research. In their 2023 State of Preschool report, they analyze the complicated landscape we find ourselves in: more states have expanded early education, but pandemic relief funds that made much of this expansion possible is drying up. How can we make sure that pre-K is widely available and high quality as we move forward? #prek #pandemicrelief #ece https://lnkd.in/eFjxEhYU

STATE OF THE STATE - EDUCATION We support Governor Kathy Hochul's commitment to evidence-based teaching practices as a way of strengthening literacy. It's also important to remember that literacy begins before children even start to read. Making sure every child gets a strong start in their education also requires investments in Pre-Kindergarten education. The funding formula for Pre-K needs adjusting. Without it, districts that were early adopters of Universal Pre-K won't be able to keep up with inflation and rising costs and children who benefit the most from Pre-K will lose out. The state of preschool in America is at a crucial moment. While some states have committed to publicly funded preschool education, the number of children enrolled in state-funded preschool is still lower than it was before the pandemic. Inadequate funding is a near-universal problem, and many states fall short of meeting most of the benchmarks for quality policies. The future hinges on whether or not states will increase funding enough to keep promises regarding program expansion and quality, including adequate pay for the workforce.
