Today is the United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA79) High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR) in New York City. #DYK that human health care costs from antimicrobial resistance could rise by $159 billion per year globally? But investments in drug innovation and healthcare improvements can reduce these costs by $97 billion. Learn how in the new #EcoAMR series 👇 https://bit.ly/3BcEcfM Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office - Research, Science and Innovation | World Organisation for Animal Health | Center for Global Development | Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation | RAND Europe

🐾 It's #NationalPetDay today, and I am excited to share our last publication in the Journal of Small Animal Practice (JSAP, Wiley-BSAVA) 📃 This work was led by Heather Davies, aiming to identify suspected Adverse Drug Reactions in small animals' Electronic Health Records. Here, we used a text-mining approach to SAVSNET data (clinical free-text) 🔍 We found a significant under-reporting rate, highlighting the need for interventions to improve pharmacovigilance in small animals. This Nature Medicine article highlights the crucial need for enhanced surveillance and proactive measures to mitigate the risk of H5N1 transmission during the Hajj. It underscores the importance of a One Health approach, integrating human and animal health efforts to ensure global safety. While the article effectively addresses the risks and proposes comprehensive strategies, it could further explore the practical challenges of implementing these measures in resource-limited settings and the potential socio-cultural barriers to compliance.

The UK's 5-year action plan for antimicrobial resistance: 2024 to 2029 The UK's second 5-year national action plan for tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is now available! The plan details nine strategic outcomes across four themes, spanning all sectors of human health, animal health, agriculture and the environment (see figure below). I'm pleased to see that public engagement and education is at the forefront of the strategy (Theme 1, outcome 2). https://lnkd.in/dUkYyiu7 #AMR #antimicrobialresistance #innovation #infectionprevention #antimicrobialstewardship #healthinequality

How you prescribe antimicrobials matters!
Antimicrobials are used to prevent, treat and control infections in humans, animals and plants. However, the overuse and misuse of antimicrobials across sectors lead to antimicrobial resistance, posing a threat to healthcare systems, livelihoods and economies. At the #AMR conference hosted by the UK Government & The Royal Society today, Director General, Dr Monique Eloit introduced EcoAMR, a consortium of international partners led by WOAH to assess the current health burden and economic impact of #antimicrobial resistance in the human and animal health sectors. The new evidence from EcoAMR will inform the #UNGA High-Level Meeting on AMR to take concrete and bold actions and inform countries for their decision-making, policy formulation, and domestic funding —a critical milestone for global action on AMR.

Which is worse? Brief intense animal suffering or longer lasting but more moderate suffering? Here are five take-aways from yesterday's webinar: (1) Pain's aversiveness escalates disproportionally with its intensity, making severe pains feel disproportionately worse. (2) Insights from human pain studies are limited and difficult to apply to animals, and designing experiments to address this issue in animals is inherently challenging. (3) We therefore favor a disaggregated approach (keeping estimates of time in pain of each intensity separate) . Disaggregated estimates can currently rank most welfare challenges and production scenarios in terms of suffering. (4) The effects of long-lasting pain extend beyond the immediate experience, likely leading to long-term welfare consequences that may themselves lead to extremely intense pain. (5) Where difficult trade-offs are present, we suggest examining which weights would steer different decision paths, and determining how justifiable those weights are. In general, when assessing interventions with equivalent cost and tractability, we have a stronger inclination towards strategies that alleviate prolonged suffering given its multiple consequences. https://lnkd.in/dqmX9mQi

Did you know the U.S. is the only high-quality beef exporting nation that does not have an end-to-end, robust disease traceability system? If a foreign animal disease were to hit, the disruption could be devastating to our cattle industry. That's why U.S. CattleTrace is on a mission to create a voluntary contact tracing system for the beef industry that could be used in the event of a disease outbreak! Learn more from U.S. CattleTrace's Executive Director Callahan Grund, here: https://lnkd.in/gXiAGcDF #BeefMonth
