A recent cross-sectional study by researchers at The Tisch Cancer Institute, published in Breast Cancer Research, has uncovered a significant connection between insulin resistance and racial disparities in breast cancer prognosis. The study, involving 515 women from 10 U.S. hospitals, found that insulin resistance plays a key role in mediating the association between race and poor disease outcomes. Key findings include: 1. African American women have higher insulin levels compared to white women, which may contribute to more aggressive tumor behavior. 2. Black women are 20% more likely to have metabolic syndrome, which is linked to increased breast cancer risk. 3. Breast cancers in Black women show an elevated insulin receptor to insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor ratio, making them more susceptible to the tumor-promoting effects of high insulin levels. 4. The research suggests that differences in insulin metabolism among races may contribute to these disparities. The study's authors, Dr. Emily Gallagher and Dr. Nina Bickell, emphasize the importance of these findings for future research and potential interventions. They suggest exploring whether lowering insulin levels or targeting insulin receptor signaling could improve breast cancer survival rates, particularly among younger Black women who often face more aggressive forms of breast cancer. On the occasion of International Childhood Cancer Day, I feel compelled to bring attention to one of the most heartbreaking struggles that our children endure: retinoblastoma, which is commonly referred to as the childhood cancer. In a year when approximately 110,000 children lost their lives to cancer and nearly 280,000 were diagnosed, understanding the complexities of the disease becomes critical. As Founder & Director of Sbarro Health Research Organization at Temple University, I've witnessed the relentless efforts of the scientific community in unraveling the mysteries of Retinoblastoma. This cancer's significance extends beyond its clinical manifestation; it was the first human cancer to reveal an inheritance mechanism. Through the lens of molecular biology, we've identified the RB gene as a pivotal player in tumor suppression, opening avenues for targeted therapies and personalized interventions. As we navigate the complexity of Retinoblastoma, our collaborative goal is to break down the complicated genetic landscape, paving the way for precision medicine and personalized treatments. Each research project brings us closer to a future where every kid diagnosed with Retinoblastoma can embark on a journey of healing and hope. NIPT, a staple in prenatal care for detecting foetal chromosomal abnormalities, now emerges as a potential early cancer detection tool. Recent findings from the ongoing IDENTIFY trial, as presented by Diana Bianchi at the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics annual meeting, reveal a startling correlation between "non-reportable" results from non-invasive prenatal tests (NIPT) and the potential presence of undiagnosed cancer in pregnant women. The trial's early results indicate that nearly half of the women with non-reportable NIPT results were subsequently found to have cancer, with Hodgkin lymphoma, colorectal cancer, and breast cancer being the most common types diagnosed. This discovery underscores the urgent need for a paradigm shift in how we interpret and follow up on NIPT results. It calls for a comprehensive approach, incorporating whole-body MRI scans as part of the diagnostic process for women with non-reportable NIPT results, to ensure early detection and treatment of cancer. Cancer treatment can also cause accelerated aging, which increases the risk of secondary cancers, infertility, cardiovascular disease, and other health problems. But unlike normal aging, epigenetic aging may be reversible, prompting Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers and patients to work together to unlock the secrets of epigenetic aging. Joyce Ohm, PhD, Chair of Cancer Genetics and Genomics and an internationally recognized expert in cancer epigenetics, says the problem is critical for pediatric, adolescent, and young adult patients who survive cancer, but face a higher risk of developing new health problems usually seen in older adults. As a global leader in the relatively new field of cancer epigenetics, Roswell Park is rallying the expertise of its faculty, input from its patients, and the power of its research infrastructure to better understand and control epigenetic aging. 📑New research on disparities in #cervicalcancer screening rates: lower income regions have significantly lower cervical cancer screening rates and higher rates of #cancer burden. These findings, featured in Cancer Network and presented at the Society of Gynecologic Oncology 2024 Annual Meeting, are a key first step to reducing disparities. Part of the solution is patient activation. When people know what their health risks are and what next steps to take, they are more likely to get regular screenings. Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Pathologic Complete Response and Overall Survival in Patients With Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Treated With Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy:- ✓Black women have higher rates of death from triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) than White women. ✓We hypothesized that pathologic complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and overall survival (OS) may vary by race/ethnicity in patients with TNBC. •#methods :- ✓We identified women 18 years and older with stage I-III TNBC who received NAC followed by surgery from the National Cancer Database (2010-2019). ✓We excluded patients without race/ethnicity or pathology data. Primary outcomes were pCR rates and OS on the basis of race/ethnicity. •#results :- ✓Historically, Black women develop TNBC at higher rates and have worse survival outcomes than white women. ✓Chemotherapy is a front-line treatment and can be lifesaving. Overall, the researchers found that chemotherapy completely eradicated TNBC tumors in 29.8% of cases, but there were racial/ethnic differences in that response rate: • 27% for Black women •28.8% for Asian women •30.5% for white women •32.6% for Hispanic women ✓"Interestingly, our study found that Hispanic women, who have similar socioeconomics and tumor stage as Black women, have higher rates of response to chemotherapy, which further supports our hypothesis that biological differences may exist within TNBC based on race/ethnicity,". ✓"Further research into understanding the biologic differences that affect response to treatment is necessary to identify more effective treatment options for patients with this aggressive breast cancer subtype and address the racial disparities in the outcomes,". #cancerresearch #chemotherapy #TNBC #racialdisparities

At Myriad, we believe that all patients should have access to an accurate picture of their breast cancer risk, which is why we validated our breast cancer risk assessment tool MyRisk with RiskScore in 2021 for women of all ancestries. Working with industry leading researchers, we assessed data from more than 275,000 women to validate our enhanced method for assessing polygenic breast cancer risk assessments in women across ancestries. Myriad’s providers have already seen impact that polygenic risk scores can have in helping identify breast cancer earlier; we’re pleased to see more data from others that also say the same. It’s important to support research that helps to address ethnic #disparities in #healthcare to protect #healthequity for all.
