There can be no greater threat to a peaceful, democratic political process than violence committed in the name of democracy. At the National League for Nursing, we condemn in no uncertain terms all efforts to undermine the right to vote, the right to peacefully assemble and protest, and the right to free speech. As staunch and vocal advocates of public health, we mourn the tragic loss of life and renew our calls to find ways to end gun violence and invest more resources in mental health services and access to equitable, affordable care. We will also continue to strive to end extreme divisions among us and co-create a culture of equity, integrity and caring that celebrates our diversity and embraces our common humanity. Civic engagement is the actions that we and our communities take to identify and address problems, which helps shape our opportunities to be healthy. By taking actions to get more civically engaged, like voting, we exercise our right to make decisions about our communities, like whether our neighborhoods have walkable sidewalks, how much funding goes to reproductive health clinics in our states and how prepared the nation’s infrastructure is for future pandemics and disasters. Today is Fentanyl Awareness & Prevention Day. In #Arizona there is a #fentanyl epidemic that has transformed families and taken lives. Recent data from the Common Sense Institute Arizona reports that the economic impact cost Arizona $58 billion last year. That includes healthcare cost. Nearly 2,000 Arizonans died from opioid overdoses in 2023. That number has doubled since it was declared a public health #emergency in 2017. From 2015 to 2019 the cost from opioid related hospitalization has surged 120% to $676 million. This pressure on our fragile #healthcare system continues to grow as fentanyl use increases. We #encourage medical professionals to get involved and become informed on #advocacy and #policy issues that have a direct consequence on our healthcare community, patient care, and physician wellness. From 2012 to 2021 there was a notable increase in firearm mortality rates in the U.S., including Texas. Texas had significantly higher firearm mortality rates than the U.S. from 2019 to 2021. Firearm-related fatalities constituted the primary mechanism of trauma-related deaths at JPS Health Network (Level 1 Trauma Center) from 2017 to 2021. These increases have led to multidisciplinary partnerships across communities to address and prevent firearm violence. Recognizing the interconnection between Social Determinants of Health and firearm violence involves understanding socio-economic, environmental, and cultural factors. The utilization of collective efficacy principles in community engagement facilitates the establishment of strategic partnerships to mitigate and prevent firearm violence. Tarrant County Public Health (TCPH) and JPS partnered to research the prevalence of firearm-related injuries and deaths in Tarrant County, Texas.

Navigating Medi-Cal to access vital developmental services for a child is often an overwhelming journey for families, marked by provider network inadequacies, long wait times, and a complicated early intervention delivery system. These challenges make it near impossible for families to access needed services in a timely matter, delaying critical early intervention and creating unnecessary stress and potential setbacks in a child's development. What is civic engagement? Civic engagement, the actions that we and our communities take to identify and address problems, shapes our opportunities to be healthy. A recent analysis of civic engagement and state health outcomes from 1996 to 2020 showed that in states where people are more civically engaged and vote more, public health outcomes are better.

This is another way to depopulate the planet. Sponsored and assisted murder by the state. Minnesota is looking to adopt laws that would allow “assisted suicide.” There are programs where the government allows people to ask their doctors to kill them, and the killing is framed as a type of medical procedure. There are 20 U.S. states currently considering these laws, but the ideas are becoming increasingly controversial, as people look to countries like Canada to see where the laws could lead. People are being recommended assisted suicide as if it were a normal medical procedure, even when they haven’t requested it. And there is growing concern over assisted suicide being offered to people with mental disabilities, or even to children. https://lnkd.in/erW6uAhu

The power of testimony in Congress or committee hearings can reap many benefits for the nation's health. These procedures are often foreign to the general population and many professions who have the opportunity to raise a voice in legislation. For those interested in making change by advocating for legislative policies, check this video out to witness a glorifying testimony by Jelly Roll on a topic that hits home to him. Nurses, doctors, social workers, mental health professionals, and ALL other professions must receive education within their curriculums to understand the importance of policy advocacy to make appropriate changes for the ones they serve. By providing facts that initially emphasized the problem at hand and giving personal experiences and imperative statistics, Jelly Roll painted an excellent picture for legislators. His goal was to express the need for targeted interventions in mitigating the fentanyl crisis in the US, a notable rising health concern. Powerful example of giving testimony in the political arena. Well done, Jelly Roll.
