Indonesia’s Tobacco Excise Sharing Fund (DBHCHT) policy mandates that part of the fund be allocated for tobacco crop diversification – reducing the farmers’ reliance on the tobacco industry as well as implementing Article 17 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). We collected primary data from key stakeholders in four main tobacco-producing municipalities. A number of challenges related to DBHCHT utilization remained at subnational levels. The suboptimal use of DBHCHT could be explained in part by (i) constantly changing central government regulations, (ii) farmers’ unawareness of DBHCHT regulations, (iii) delays in DBHCHT allocation, and (iv) supply and demand mismatches. Although Indonesia has not been a part of the FCTC ratification, the DBHCHT mandate is in line with the FCTC article 17, i.e., promoting economically viable alternatives for tobacco farmers. This study concluded that DBHCHT utilization needs to go further to void this mandate given the challenges at the subnational level. Therefore, this study recommends additional technical and practical regulations involving multisectoral stakeholders and the use of DBHCHT to meet the financial needs of crop diversification. https://lnkd.in/g-DE7Jf4 OPEN #tobaccocontrol #tobacco #tobacconomics #publichealth #publicpolicy #socialwelfare

To what extent can you use the word MILK in your trade mark if your products are not milk but milk substitutes? Answered here by my colleague Jamie Emerick.
Last year, in December 2023, the Chancery Division of the High Court handed down its decision on the use of the word “milk” in trade marks for non-dairy milk alternatives. The case, Oatly AB v Dairy UK LTD [2023] EWHC 3204 (Ch), was a successful appeal against a decision of the UKIPO, which had held that the word mark POST MILK GENERATION ought to be declared invalid for goods in classes 29, 30 and 32. Poland is breaking records. Over 51.8 billion euros of food sold in 2023. In 2023, Polish entrepreneurs sold agricultural and food products abroad at a record value of 51.8 billion euros (236 billion PLN), which is 8.1 percent higher than the previous year, according to Henryk Smolarz, the Director-General of the National Support Centre for Agriculture. The European Union remained Poland's main trading partner in 2023, receiving over 73 percent of the country's food exports. Food products worth 38 billion euros (173 billion PLN) were sold in the EU market, marking a 7 percent increase compared to 2022. This marks another successful year for Polish food exports. Several factors contribute to this result, including the continued competitiveness of Polish products in terms of price and quality. https://lnkd.in/d-Kmiv9N #Poland #Agriculture #KOWR #FDI #Investments

Now that the panelists which will review the #USMCA #CUSMA case on GM #corn have been appointed, trade authorities in Canada, Mexico, and the US expect the preliminary report between 20 March and 19 April 2024, unless the panel itself requests for additional time. The panel has to analize three major questions and based on its assessment, it will award a compensation that has been touted by different US legislators between four and 20 billion dollars, which will be announced 30 calendar days after the publication of the preliminary report. These are the three questions before the panel:

It's important to shine a little light on SNDL (aka SWNDL) - used to be Sundial Growers... ...because it feels like there are some real issues hiding in the shadows - things Zach would prefer you don't see. - SNDL is into a lot of different business - growing and selling cannabis, retailing cannabis, retailing liquor, investing in cannabis companies - that brings in a lot of unique costs and requires a lot of unique expertise, that does not generate any total business synergies - SNDL loses money operationally and had accumulated over $1.1 billion in total losses - SNDL has made what looks to be some pretty bad investments, what with Parallel and Skymint - we might expect to see some Balance Sheet hits on their investment asset values - SNDL has seen their share price drop, continually, as it starts to approach that $1 price point - they already executed a reverse stock split (10:1) in 2022, and they could be needing to do it, yet again It's just not a well run business, in an industry with lots of not well run businesses - but they'd prefer you keep your head in the sand...and your money in their stock.

There are about 3.5 million coconut farmers in the Philippines, and about 25 million Filipinos are directly or indirectly dependent on the coconut industry. Coconut is one of the two agricultural commodities that earns the country more than a billion dollars in export revenues every year according to the Department of Agriculture. Coconut farmers in the Philippines are often smallholders with minimal resources. Many of them are just tenants or farm caretakers, and they face numerous challenges in their day-to-day lives. One of the biggest issues that our coconut farmers face is the lack of infrastructure. This includes poor roads and interconnectivity, and lack of efficient transportation facilities. Farmers must depend on others to provide transport services which increases their operational costs significantly. The lack of proper and effective transportation facilities makes it difficult for our farmers to sell their produce at reasonable and fair prices. Furthermore, the aging coconut trees result in lower yields over time. The prevalence of pests and diseases not only decreases productivity but also requires costly interventions that impact the already slim profit margins of our farmers. Coconut farmers are also affected by the fluctuating global market prices for coconut-based products, which create uncertainty and vulnerability. The Philippine government’s Coconut Farmers Industry Development Plan aims to improve the overall coconut production around the country and offer a more sustainable livelihood for the farmers. It has seven components ranging from social protection, coconut farmers organization and development, hybridization, community-based farm enterprise development: farm rehabilitation and improvement, integrated coconut processing and downstream products, innovative research projects, and support services (ie Research, Marketing, and Market Promotion (Department of Trade and Industry). As Roxas Sigma Agriventures Inc. continues to promote and market our 100% pure, all-natural, and world-standard Coconut Cream, Coconut Milk. Coconut Water Concentrate and Virgin Coconut Oil to the world, we are helping in our small way to uplift the lives of our smallholder coconut farmers. The status quo for pricing milk will soon change. Our senior dairy analyst, Ben Laine, has written a new report to help producers understand the USDA's proposed changes to Federal Milk Marketing Order price formulas. The report also highlights the importance of evaluating whether any potential changes could hinder milk movement, processing investments or trade. For a deeper understanding of this topic, read Ben's report 👉 https://brnw.ch/21wLKnI. Below, Ben shares three things to know about the federal order reform process. 🥛 #Dairy #USDA #FMMO

The Café Cocoa Council is planning the killing of several cooperatives. As part of the establishment of the inter-profession, the CCC decided to put an end to several coffee and cocoa cooperatives. Through a press release dated July 10, the CCC informs cooperatives of the new coding conditions for the 2024/25 campaign. Among the conditions required for the new campaign, a stir among producers and cooperatives. It indicates that cooperatives must provide a certificate of agricultural potential of at least 1000 tonnes of coffee and cocoa, resulting from the production potential of the members. This decision is considered as the death of small cooperatives for the benefit of large ones. Several presidents with whom we spoke on the issue, expressed their astonishment and denounced the consequences of such a decision to the extent that cooperatives according to ohada, cooperatives are cooperative societies and consequently, they operate like commercial companies apart from whole. They qualify the said decision as an abuse of power. But the problem is, not everyone shares the same vision. According to a cooperative director, the CCC is within its rights in the same way that it is the producers who lent the blank. The CCC is the supervisory authority, but it is not a bank. It is normal for the government to dictate its conditions since it is we who went to ask for subsidies. It is the one who finances who sets his conditions. Not everyone is of this opinion and producers have already met the Minister of Agriculture to decry the measure. The different delegations, facing the Minister of Agriculture, denounce an abrupt decision full of consequences Ousmane Attai, cocoa expert, Cocoa research, consultant, former journalist at Dow Jones Newswires Tel(whatsapp)+ 225 0707 9450 24 Email: ousmaneattai@gmail.com
