In the world of audiology, there are three and four-year doctoral programs. The past few years have given rise to more universities transitioning from four to three-year programs. I've heard people talk down on three-year programs while others sing their praises. This is my honest opinion of them. They are for some and not for others. While I'm sure they are all designed differently, they are fast-paced with a lot of information very quickly. Exams come at you fast, and how you learn plays a huge roll. I've also heard things mentioned about not as much clinic time for those in three-year programs. I'd like to personally put that to bed right now. I am a product of a three-year program, and the clinical experiences I received were excellent and covered all facets of the field. They included the following: Hearing Rehab Center (Private Practice), Salem Audiology Clinic (Private Practice), Oregon Health and Science University (Hospital), Educational Service District 112 (School Based, Vancouver, Washington), Willamette ESD (School Based, Salem, Oregon), Advanced Bionics, Research & Technology (Manufacturer), Providence Neurodevelopmental Center for Children, (Self-explanatory, Portland, Oregon), NHS Lothian (Public Hospital, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK), A Private Interoperative Monitoring Company (Portland, Oregon), Legacy Emanuel Medical Center (Portland, Oregon), and University of Chicago Medical Center (Chicago, IL). I had hands-on experiences and was a sponge, learning everything I could at each location. I had a phenomenal experience, being the second class ever to graduate from Pacific University in Oregon. This three-year program challenged me and pushed me to be better. I don't think three-year programs are bad at all. I just think when you're researching programs, you need to make the right choice of how you learn and the pace you can do so. Challenge yourself, but also be willing to rise to the challenge. #audiology #cochlearimplant #hearinghealth #hearingaids #ears #aud2b

OPINION EDITORIAL | ACEN: Not Right Here, Right Now Within the last few years, several articles have emerged sharing ideas and data on how the externship process can be improved. The Audiology Clinical Education Network (ACEN) addresses students’ requests for standardization. ACEN is a relatively new, voluntary network of externship sites agreeing to common, uniform application timelines to standardize the application process and reduce burden on all stakeholders. #AudiologyToday Read the full Audiology Today article: https://lnkd.in/eZkWMBfs

During my graduate studies at the University of Kansas, I was struck by the separation between our Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology departments. While we shared a hallway, there was little collaboration on clinical cases. This seemed counterintuitive, especially considering the significant overlap in our disciplines, for example, in clients with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). Imagine the impact of combining our expertise to diagnose and treat APD more effectively? I'm thrilled to see several universities I mentor taking steps to integrate their programs, recognizing the potential to enhance client care. My personal goal is to make online APD courses obsolete as more students leave university with these skills. By fostering collaboration, we can create a world where professionals work together seamlessly, utilizing their collective knowledge to provide comprehensive, personalized treatment plans. We must bridge the communication gap between our disciplines to achieve this. While we may speak different languages, finding common ground in our shared clients will unlock a future filled with exciting possibilities. I envision a world where Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology work hand-in-hand, improving outcomes for those with APD amongst other difficulties. Hopefully, none of them will have much to do with the Austin Police Department. 😂 #audiology #speechlanguagepathology #auditoryprocessingdisorder #collaboration #interprofessionalpractice #audpeeps #slpeeps

I had a great first day of talking at Anne Davies course 'Hearing Aids: The Inside Track'. This course is aimed to equip clinicians (mainly adult audiology but also with a nod to Peadiatric Audiologists) with knowledge to prescirbe the best hearing solution for patients. My talk and workshops were on 'Patient Centred Care (PCC)'. My main points were to 'real play' through the elemements of PCC: 👉Focusing on the individual's needs and beliefs 👉Active Listening 👉Empathy 👉Open Ended Questions 👉Shared Goal Setting 👉Involving Significant Others #Education #PatientCentredCare #Audiology

Thanks to CAPCSD for their invitation to Amyn M. Amlani, Ph.D. and myself (Victor Bray) to present a webinar on "The Profession of Audiology: Data, Concerns, Opportunities." This webinar collated our research over the last five years (2019-2014) with data to support the following conclusions concerning audiology: 1. We have a workforce problem. 2. We have a wage-to-degree mismatch problem. 3. We (might) have an AuD-degree pipeline problem. 4. We have a cost-of-education vs. wage problem. The recorded webinar was of particular importance as it provided to us the opportunity to share these concerning conclusions with CSD program directors, who are most often speech-language pathologists and who may not have had visibility of our work that has been previously presented through audiology-focused venues (conference presentations, research posters, publications, webinars, and podcasts). The concluding question that we asked the CAPCSD community is "How Are We (Audiology) Going to Increase the Value of our Profession?" As part of a coordinated plan toward an improved future, we look to the many interested parties, including AuD-degree program directors, to recognize the current problems of the profession and collaborate toward developing an improved path forward for audiology. #CAPCSD
