Political Advisor to the Commander, NATO Allied Maritime Command; Honorary Professor, University of Plymouth; Distinguished Fellow, Council on Geostrategy; Senior Non-Resident Fellow, Center for Maritime Strategy
Very pleased to contribute to the new ISPI publication 'Contested Seas: European Security and Fragmentation of the Maritime Security Order' My contribution traces Allied maritime posture and thinking from the era of Cold War sea power to the post-Cold War constabulary paradigm of maritime Security against non-state threats, and the eventual re-embrace of sea power in the face of Russian aggression and a range of other state-based threats.
🌊 Contested Seas: European Security and the Fragmentation of the Maritime Order 🌊 Read the ISPI publication co-authored by Professor Alessio Patalano which examines the challenges to the maritime order and the governance and capabilities needed to address maritime security. 👇 https://lnkd.in/e-sfwmFk

Abdulsalam AlMadani and Director Hon. Gennaro Migliore, we have finally started this remarkable #journey towards fostering international understanding and cooperation. At the heart of our mission lies the concept of building #trust, where dialogue, collaboration, and mutual respect pave the way for a brighter, more interconnected World. The CGS-PAM is already engaged in a number of partnerships with high-level institutions and organizations, including the United Nations and the Council of Europe, on a range of critical issues, such as the malicious use of #AI and innovative technologies, CBRNe threats, as well as the UN-led efforts to reflect of the functioning and effectiveness of multilateral international institutions, in order to rebuild the concept of trust in the world governance system. Today marks not only the opening of a physical space but also the beginning of a profound exchange of ideas and perspectives. Let’s open to the World!

The Global South is rising, Roxanne Escobales writes in the intro of the latest edition of Chatham House’s international affairs magazine The World Today ✍️ “Many geopolitical events have led to this moment, including most recently the number of abstentions in 2022’s United Nations vote against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and the International Court of Justice case of genocide brought by South Africa against the mighty Western ally, Israel, for its assault on Gaza.” In our latest View newsletter, we explore the recent developments that both reflect and add momentum to a transformation of the current world order 🌐 https://lnkd.in/gdFDEhqU #WorldWise #GlobalDev #newsletter #GlobalSouth #geopolitics #internationalrelations

the points I raise about the potential death knell of the post-World War II international order are valid and concerning. The selective application of international norms and mechanisms by global institutions like the UN, if perceived as favoring the interests of dominant powers, could indeed contribute to the fragmentation and erosion of the rules-based global system. Addressing this challenge will require a renewed commitment to impartiality, transparency, and the consistent application of international law and human rights standards, regardless of the geopolitical influence of the nations involved.
