Not only was child care a leading question in the VP debate last night, 3 incredible stand outs for me: 1) Recognition that there is broad bipartisan support for child care; 2) Continued emphasis on the importance of family choice; 3) This one was the biggie! Understanding we need demand AND supply side investments. There is no child care without child care teachers and programs that can survive and thrive. Senator JD Vance the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) is this. A federal grant program that provides annual funds to cities, counties, and states to develop communities for low- and moderate-income people. CDBG funds can be used for housing rehabilitation, homebuyer assistance, public facilities, and more. Child care is funded through the CCDBG. Which is the Child Care Development Block Grant. And guess what, family friends and neighbors can access that money for qualifying low income children. So long as they pass an FBI fingerprint background check and take some basic health and safety and child development. Which is imperative to ensure the healthy development of the child entrusted and paid for by taxpayers. Some states are better at ensuring people know about this access, some states don't do it, but the law allows it. Furthermore, only about 10% of qualifying families actually utilize the subsidy program. We need to fully fund it.

So excited to share about meeting #StevensCounty Commissioner Kopitzke and County Administrator Becky Young . We talked about their awesome work in making over 60 new spots for family child care in Stevens County, MN. Here’s what really stuck with me: 1. #NewGround: There’s so much still to learn about multi-unit child care spaces. It’s exciting to keep learning! 2. #TeamworkRocks: Having a strong team makes a huge difference. This project showed just how true that is. 3. #BigImpact: In this process, they’ve identified eight people who wanted to start child care but didn’t have the space. This shows there’s a big chance to do more for our communities. I appreciated the opportunity to build more knowledge to help support the communities we’re helping guide through similar processes to create new space for child care. This work shows how creating spaces can really help our communities grow stronger. Let's keep pushing and making things better, one step at a time! #Childcare #Rural #EconomicDevelopment

No doubt non-traditional hours are a tremendous deficit in childcare services, in GA and across the country. This deficit can also indirectly lead to fewer women choosing careers in professions with non-traditional hours, as it’s often women who take lion share burden of caregiving at home. Think, too, of the needs of the community - without non-traditional care, other services offered during these hours are limited because of limited workforce. Solutions will make a widespread impact - pleased that GA is taking this on.
A new brief from Urban Institute – Understanding the Need for Nontraditional-Hour Child Care in Georgia – details the importance of #childcare options being open longer hours and beyond traditional hours. The brief answers questions about nonparental child care needs and provides the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning with considerations for supporting parents with those nontraditional-hour child care needs. https://urbn.is/3T15nAW

As the owner of Preferred ChildCare and a consultant to 400+ nanny agencies, I've been at the forefront of understanding the complex relationship between childcare and employee-employer issues. I am so pleased to have shared some of my own insights in @Asahi Pompey’s recent spotlight of #childcare needs for small businesses. The statistics are telling: A striking 48% of small business owners report that childcare issues affect their hiring and retention, while 52% have adapted their policies to better support employees' childcare needs. These statistics highlight the critical need for innovative childcare solutions. I advocate for practical measures that small businesses can take: like cost-sharing for childcare services, establishing a "Childcare Benefit Bank" for employees, and partnering with local childcare agencies. These approaches can ease the burden on working parents and enhance overall workplace productivity. My journey as an entrepreneur, particularly through the enriching experience with the 10,000 Small Businesses program, was one I never expected. #10KSB ignited a passion in me to leverage my strengths as a cheerleader, galvanizer, and ideator, and channel them into a consulting business that aids other nanny agencies (thank you Jim Fitzgerald for sparking the idea!). ”This doesn't even feel like work," I often find myself thinking, even after marathon days filled with back-to-back calls. The satisfaction and joy I derive from my work is due to the alignment between my career and my intrinsic personality traits. I love cheering on so many other business owners, who are providing critical childcare that families rely on across the country. I’m so grateful to have been steered towards a journey of authenticity and purpose. Childcare is not just a personal issue; it's a critical business concern that demands our collective attention and action. We surveyed 500 #10KSB small business owners on the challenges of childcare for their businesses. Here’s what they had to say: 48% of small business owners cited childcare availability and affordability affecting hiring and keeping talent. 52% of small business owners have made adjustments to their business operations or policies to accommodate employees child care needs. 57% of small business owners with children in childcare reported spending $1,000 or more per month and cited detrimental effects to productivity, revenue, and business hours. Meet Megan Metzger, a 10,000 Small Businesses alum, and domestic staffing agency owner from North Carolina. From guiding over 400 agencies on starting and scaling their businesses, her insights help illuminate solutions to small business childcare needs. Megan's Tips for Small Businesses Offering Childcare Benefits: Cost Sharing: Share the cost of childcare services with employees, whether it's a nanny agency or daycare. Childcare Benefit "Bank": Create a benefit structure where the employer provides a set number of covered days (or hours) each year for childcare, which can be distributed among employees. Local Childcare Agencies: Partner with a local childcare agency.
