What do you think resonates most with the jury? It’s not my choice of tie or shoes. Good trials tell the human-interest story. It’s our job to identify the right human-interest story and share it with the jury. I was a wannabe journalist early in life. I learned the art of telling the human-interest story. Now, I collaborate with journalists and biographers. I have them interview my client and the witnesses. I ask for their unfiltered opinions regarding what the right human-interest story is. My work with journalists and biographers helps: - Identify key witnesses, - Craft compelling narratives - Ask the right questions I watch the jury engage with my narrative. The jury connects with the story. It helps arm the jurors in deliberations. It improves the outcome of my cases. Have you ever used journalists or biographers to help you find the right human-interest story? Let me know your experience. Contact me if you want to learn more.

Vale The Wall Street Journal ‘Wall Street Journal Editor-in-Chief Emma Tucker is making changes at the venerable publication, pushing more “life-style stories with snappy headlines” in the news section — and she’s reportedly downsized, if not gutted, the standards desk that handles corrections. She’s eliminated an editing team “responsible for prepublication review of sensitive stories.”’ The new direction, as described in a National Review story, resonates alarmingly for many readers of the newspaper who have long counted on its fact-focused, serious coverage, but find something very different today. For many, the increasingly skewed, factually shoddy coverage of Israel is a striking indicator of the wider shift in the paper’s tenor and content. Reporter Omar Abdel-Baqui could be the poster child for this new Wall Street Journal. Over the past year, however, and with increasing frequency, possibly coinciding with changes under Emma Tucker, the news pages have declined to address substantive errors that are corrected by other news outlets. Moreover, the tilt of the errors has been markedly in one direction– towards denigrating Israel’s position in the conflict with the Palestinians. Accuracy, impartiality, and accountability — the precious components of honorable journalism on which a public relies to learn about the world and to help shape reasoned response to events — are on the wane in the news pages of the Wall Street Journal.’ https://lnkd.in/gvUN7w3U

For anyone willing to invest a few minutes and learn what really happened at the LA Times, why their Editor quit and why so many reporters and staffers were fired, leaving the venerable tome near journalistic extinction, read this brilliant piece from "The Hollywood Reporter". This is not all about money, rather a wealthy family with specific political views demanding that instead of journalism, THEIR paper must deliver a slanted view of the news THEY deem important. Or else. Do you even read newspapers any more in any form? Do you demand fairness and balance in what you read, or are you more likely to gravitate towards bias because it fits your opinion? Whom do you read for fair and balanced coverage? Don't sell for one second that it doesn't exist. It certainly does, and the outcome depends on YOU, what YOU read and what YOU demand. #newspapers #media #LATimes #journalism #bias #propaganda ##greed #corporateownership #deathofjournalism #politics https://lnkd.in/erirM8C3

The NT News. The slow death of a once valued journal of record. If you’d paid your full whack of $3.00 for today's NT News, this is what you got: - 19.5 pages of locally-sourced journalism—including coverage of the Australian Prime Minister and Cabinet’s visit to Darwin; the 20th anniversary “mooning” of the Ghan transcontinental train; editorial; content; letters to the Editor; sport etc; - 15.5 pages of material sourced from the national and international wire services; other satellite publications in the News network and syndicated material; - Four pages of the Tabcorp Form Guide for the neddies at southern racetracks; and - a whopping 51 pages of advertising from the (not so) good and (not so) great of the Australian retail world. ... Today’s NT News is but an embarrassing simulacrum of its antecedents. Thats not to disparage the individual efforts of the editors and more-than-capable young journalists that turn up for work every day to bring us the word from the courts, parliamentary galleries, crime scenes and the thousand disparate events that make up our daily news. Thanks for the invite to talk today to Scholars Strategy Network’s AL chapter along with Priska Neely, Dr. Jones! 3 tips for scholars looking to connect with media: 📚You can be an expert: You might not be the world expert in the topic a journalist is asking you about. But if you’ve worked on it and can talk about the broad issue, don’t be afraid to do the interview. 📚Frame the big picture: Journalists will probably ask you why X or Y is important in context of current news or policy. Help the reader or listener place the research in context. Use plain language. Get excited! 📚You can ask us questions, too: Reputable journalists should identify their outlet, story topic, deadline and editorial process. If any of those things are unclear, ask! And feel free to ask questions about when the story will publish, etc.

It seems like everyone is talking about the creator economy, the rise of independent journalists, and the business and audience challenges traditional newsrooms are facing. And that's where Liz Kelly Nelson comes in ... she's working on a really cool project for Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program at Columbia. Liz is exploring the kinds of support independent journalists who are currently working in -- or considering making the leap to -- the creator model need. Imagine that, starting with what the journalists NEED. If this is you, if you are considering going independent, take this survey! And if this is not you, I am sure you know someone who is, so share widely. #creatoreconomy #youtube #journalism #creators #journalists #video #podcasts
Please share! As part of my research for this year's Sulzberger program, I'm surveying independent journalism creators - or anyone curious about that path. If this describes you, take the survey. If it describes someone you know, please pass along! https://lnkd.in/eiSMt7M4
