As we reflect on the excitement from ACT, one recurring topic has emerged to the forefront: if we want to electrify, we must solve the power problem. We heard from fleets, charging depot developers, charging station operators, and more about their struggles to source power for new EV charging stations. Between grid upgrades and interconnection permitting, some are waiting years for the grid to be able to supply the power needed for new infrastructure development. We talked through different strategies and existing options, and it became clear that the solutions of today just won't cut it. We need disruptive innovation to rethink the way power is used if we want to enable and accelerate our electrification journey. Interesting paper covering electric vehicle chargers impact on the grid. We need to keep pursuing higher resolution data collection in power systems for effective control and dispatch of AC/DC and DC/AC assets connected to the grid.
Electric vehicle charging and other nonlinear loads present increasing challenges to the distribution grid. A time-domain method for calculating power and energy offers power quality and energy exchange insights that are difficult to access with frequency-based approaches.
