Our 3 ‘’founding fathers’’ ~ or ‘’founding brothers’’? They were regulators in Italy, Spain and Portugal. My respect for these 3 is immense! Academics should not believe, and not claim, that all verifiable and verified knowledge is manufactured from their heads, or their libraries. Both practionners and academics are co-producing that: Energy regulation and energy policy making are, as area of knowledge, co-produced.

In this presentation that I delivered at the Society of Economic Geologists SEG 2023 meeting, I discuss new research with Larry Cathles that quantitatively forecasts realistic global mine and refinery production of copper using copper production data from 1900-2022. We determined the amount of copper required to achieve 100% electrification of all vehicles in the U.S. and EU and charge these vehicles with electricity produced by solar panels and wind turbines. Bottom line, mine and refinery copper production cannot meet the demand for 100 % electrification. We urge policy makers to acknowledge this reality and ideate pathways to decarbonize that do not require 100% electrification. Can we mine enough copper to meet projected demand for electrification. I am hopeful that CT DEEP will begin to socialize with EJ communities and release grants that can immediately help our most disadvantaged communities gain equal access to energy and climate resilience, specifically in the areas of need that these communities are actively seeking help and support in. Since 2012 Efficiency For All (EFA) has been gathering information from Environmental Justice Communities, and we have been actively connecting these communities to information on Clean Energy and Energy Efficiency Retrofitting Careers as well as Climate Change and Climate Resilience Information. Through our work directly meeting with EJ communities EFA was able to bring forward the Barriers to EJ communities accessing energy resilient housing and to accessing energy equity or connecting meaningfully with the work of climate resilience building. We learned so much and we are sharing what we know to connect leaders and planners with the boots on the ground information.
