Unraveling the Spatial Mysteries: Exploring Centroids in Geospatial Analysis 🌍 Are you curious about the hidden gems of geospatial analysis? Let's delve into the fascinating world of centroids! 🌟 Centroids are not just points on a map; they are the strategic hubs that minimize distances to all edges of a geometric figure, often representing the "center" in most cases. In objects with homogeneous density, they coincide with the center of mass, a place where balance is achieved. 🎯 In the realm of spatial statistics, centroids play a pivotal role, bridging conventional measures of centrality and dispersion to the analysis of spatial point distributions. They encapsulate not only the variables of sampled units but also their spatial coordinates (X and Y positions) in the vast expanse of geographic data. 🗺️ In our geospatial journey, harnessing centroids unlocks a treasure trove of insights. From optimizing feature analysis to understanding spatial patterns and optimizing resource allocation, centroids are the guiding stars of spatial intelligence. ✨ Join me in exploring the power of centroids and unraveling the mysteries of geospatial analysis! Let's navigate the spatial landscape together and uncover new horizons. 🌐 See the code bellow: // Load the feature collection var varNAME = ee.FeatureCollection('your feature here'); Map.centerObject(varNAME); Map.addLayer(varNAME, {}, 'NAME'); // Filter the feature collection var varSubject = subBasins.filter(ee.Filter.eq('feature inside the f.col', 'name of the feature')); Map.addLayer(varSubject, {color: 'red'}, 'name of the subject'); // Function to calculate area var addArea = function(feature) { var areaInHa = feature.geometry().area().divide(100 * 100); return feature.set({area_in_ha: areaInHa}); }; // Apply the function to the feature var areaAdded = basin.map(addArea); // Visualize the result print('Area in hectares:', areaAdded); //----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- // Add centroids var getCentroid = function(feature) { // Select properties to keep var keepProperties = ['feature_name', 'feature_area', 'objectid']; // Get the centroid of the geometry var centroid = feature.geometry().centroid(); // Return a new feature with centroid and selected properties return ee.Feature(centroid).copyProperties(feature, keepProperties); }; // Apply the function to the feature collection var centroids = subBasins.map(getCentroid); // Visualize the centroids Map.addLayer(centroids, {color: 'yellow'}, 'Centroids'); #GeospatialAnalysis #Centroids #GISInsights #SpatialIntelligence #GeospatialInsights #DataAnalytics #codetutorials #javascript #GIS #environmental

PART VIII. GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS): Introduction to geographic data analysis In our previous article (part VII) we broached satellite imagery and the notion of image resolution. Today, we will discover geographic data analysis. To make it more actionable, we will do it through an extremely cool open source geospatial web-based analysis tool: Kepler GL (with MapLibre mapping libraries). Combining geography and data is a powerful means of communication. HOW TO MAKE STUNNING MAPS FEATURING MEANINGFUL DATA? The image attached represents GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per capita. In general, figures expressed per capita rather than in absolute values stimulate our ability to put things into perspective. Rationalising numbers makes it easier to compare things that would be otherwise hard to weigh up. Here is the step by step path used with Kepler GL. No need to be a programming language expert. I. Prep the data set 1. Get the list of all the countries that publish their GDP per capita (The World Bank is an authoritative open-data source, Wikipedia is not bad, either). 2. Once you have got country list (e.g., in CSV), you open it in a spreadsheet and you add two columns: latitude and longitude. We are going to ‘geocode’ all the countries. Indeed, mapping systems need geographic coordinates (see our article part II: Geocoding). 3. Check your data and save your file in CSV. II. Import data set into Kepler GL (https://kepler.gl/demo) 1. Use “Load Files” (drag & drop your CSV file). 2. You will automatically access the management panel. III. Style and arrange map’s look & feel 1. Default tab ‘Layers’: add a layer (select one among 13 different ‘styles’, some are fancy), then arrange the appearance you wish (colours, basemap style, etc.). NB: you can ignore second tab ‘filters’ at this stage. 2. Third tab ‘Interactions’: here you choose which information you would like to display in a tooltip when a user hovers over a point. In this tab, map creator has other advanced features to offer a richer user experience. 3. Fourth tab “Base map”: here you can change the style of the map (clear, dark; with or without labels, boundaries, etc.). 4. Upper-right corner: give a touch of professionalism with advanced viewing mode (dual map viewing), edit mode (draw figures), legend, or settings (language). 3D option is spectacular (see image below). Just play with all the available functionalities until you find the most compelling style for your map. IV. Save, export, and share your map 1. Saving: to save your map you must have an account at either Foursquare, Dropbox, or Carto. I use Dropbox. 2. Exporting: you can export your map as a PNG image (HD also available), the data (CSV), or the entire map (JSON format). 3. Sharing: to share your map as an URL, you will be prompted to select either Foursquare, Dropbox, or Carto. That’s it. Enjoy! Now, your turn! You can do the same, but with PPP (purchasing power parity). How does your country rank?
