Aerospace and defense contractor Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) is set to expand its radio frequency (RF) satellite constellation, aiming to capture a larger share of the market for electronic emissions data. The company launched its first four RF sensing cubesats last year, built by Spire, marking its entry into this increasingly competitive field. SNC is now gearing up for a significant expansion, with plans to deploy a network of 20 satellites over the next five years. Read more from SpaceNews https://lnkd.in/e2FSaNQT

The Senate Appropriations Committee’s just-revealed fiscal 2025 defense budget bill takes the Defense Department and the Intelligence Community to task for what it sees as shortfalls in promises to take better advantage of commercial space capabilities in a number of key areas. Perhaps most intriguing is language in the bill that calls into question Pentagon and IC plans to declassify data from classified remote sensing satellites they are partnering to develop and manage, under a newly developed joint architecture called the “High-Capacity, Find, Fix, Track, Target and Engage and Assess Constellation,” or “HCF” for short. The constellation comprises satellites carrying electro-optical, synthetic aperture radar and ground moving target sensors, the bill says.

#Spectrum and #Radio #Frequency #Interference (#RFI) issues? Just some blue sky thoughts from abroad. #Laser #COMMS for civil / commercial #aircraft a longer term (partial) #solution? Satellite Laser based #APNT? It would be interesting to comprehensively test #satellite / civil aircraft Laser comms one of these fine days. 🤔 (Accepted that our military friends have already achieved this with specialized aircraft and systems.) With aircraft above most WX, stable in cruise and line of light to satellites, tracking optics would have a fighting chance to achieve and maintain lock - yes? Time for military Laser comm #technology #transfer to the civil domain? Closer to the surface of earth, laser based gate links seem to be doable - sooner rather than later. Time to get rid of the old floppy disks and sneaker-net used to update some legacy airframe software? In the same line of thinking, military grade #GNSS RFI hardened #antennas would be a real asset to #airlines right about now. Any chance OEMs? Exciting times ahead in the #avionics domain.

Types of Non-Destructive Counterspace Satellites! Proximity Operations Satellites: These satellites are designed to maneuver close to an adversary’s satellite, enabling a range of actions. They could be equipped with sensors to conduct detailed surveillance of the target satellite, potentially revealing vulnerabilities or intercepting sensitive communications. Some proximity operations satellites could even have robotic arms to subtly manipulate or reposition adversary satellites. Electronic Warfare (EW) Satellites: Equipped with powerful jammers, these satellites can flood adversary satellites or ground stations with targeted interference, disrupting communications, command links, or sensor systems. EW satellites could temporarily disable or blind an adversary’s space assets without causing physical damage. Directed Energy Satellites: These satellites could employ lasers or other directed energy technologies to target sensors or delicate components on adversary satellites. This approach offers the potential to selectively disable certain functions of a satellite or temporarily hinder its operation. Cyber Warfare Satellites: In an increasingly interconnected space environment, some counter space satellites might focus on exploiting software vulnerabilities or launching cyberattacks designed to disrupt a satellite’s onboard computers or communications networks. This could lead to the satellite’s malfunction or even allow for its remote takeover. https://lnkd.in/eFGP-JAn

Discover the SCRIPT project, a technological demonstrator developed by Sener and supported by the European Space Agency - ESA. This low-cost #navigation reception system combines commercial wireless technologies, guided navigation, and inertial sensors to achieve high #precision in #indoor positioning. The system architecture is based on a distributed system with fixed beacons and remote units that carry the technology in backpacks. Managed by the robot operating system and using an extended Kalman filter, SCRIPT offers a local infrastructure with low-cost, highly sensitive hardware devices. Applications in health, critical missions, and military projects are just some of the areas where SCRIPT can make a difference. #SenerAerospaceAndDefence

The military and defense sectors are transitioning from traditional parabolic dishes to more agile multi-beam, multi-orbit antennas. The drive toward multi-orbit networks derives from the need for innovation and consistency within the military connectivity infrastructure, especially as the military relies more heavily on satellite data transmission. Widespread adoption of ESAs, or Electronically Scanned Antennas, promises unparalleled flexibility and a more compact size—with a few trade offs, such as broader beams and slightly diminished performance. What happens if space, crucial for Australian Defence Force missions, becomes inaccessible during a major conflict? If satellite communications and support are disabled or destroyed, existing critical communications networks will be lost. The data flow that fills the ADF’s common operating picture would dwindle to intermittent trickles. There are alternatives. The main one pre-dates satellites, high-frequency radio. https://lnkd.in/dxsuMEyt
