If you read this law and feel that you don't benefit from it, you are likely in the category of people who's voice and existence is not 'silenced', or who's ancestor's voices and existence were not 'silenced.' It's okay, now you know why The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is so important and has a place in our constitution and our democratic republic. "The Voting Rights Act of 1965, which marks its 59th anniversary on Aug. 6, reduced discriminatory practices that prevented Black citizens from voting and led to a dramatic increase in the participation of Black voters in U.S. elections. The law, which has been extended several times, prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or language-minority status in registration and voting nationwide. The law also provides protections for blind voters and voters with disabilities." - Excerpted from the article #civilrights #equality #vote #hearmeout #NOV5

I woke up this morning feeling excited to vote! Voting isn't just a right; it's a wonderful opportunity for change with many people having worked hard over the years to ensure we all have the chance to be heard. Important Milestones in UK Voting Rights: 1918: Women over 30 and men over 21 gained the right to vote. 1928: Equal voting rights for women and men, with everyone over 21 able to vote. 1969: The voting age was lowered to 18, giving younger people a voice in our democracy. 1965: The Race Relations Act made it illegal to refuse someone a vote based on race, promoting equality for all. I'm hoping that we will shortly be able to add the date that the voting age is lowered to 16, giving the next generation the chance to decided on their future. These key moments remind us of the progress we've made and the importance of our democratic rights. By voting today, you’re honouring those who fought for this privilege and helping to shape our future. Voting is just one way to make your voice heard. Every day is a chance to stand up for what you believe in, support change, and be the difference you wish to see in the world. Let’s make today count. Use your voice and be the change 🗳 #ElectionDay #Vote #Democracy #YourVoiceMatters #BeTheChange

Turnout is often the major factor in elections. Firing up your base can be a challenge, but engaging them and fighting for their causes is important. Never see an election as a sure thing, either a win or a loss. Sometimes events and other factors may bring about upsets or a change in voting patterns. #voting #votingmatters #voterturnout #elections #elections2024 #votingrights #governance #localgovernment #stategovernment #federalgovernment
National voting rights organization to host convening in Charleston ahead of the South Carolina Democratic Primary Election 👇 “Everything that Black communities are fighting for across the nation is on full display in South Carolina. Its racist gerrymandering is pending in the Supreme Court. It remains one of the few states that hasn’t expanded Medicaid, and it continues to attack racial justice," said Cliff Albright, co-founder and executive director of Black Voters Matter. “But Black folks in South Carolina have a history of leading the way, and this moment presents another opportunity to do so.”

NAWL recognizes the Supreme Court’s decision in Robinson v. Callais, which upholds a second majority-Black congressional district in Louisiana challenged by non-Black voters on claims of racial gerrymandering. While the upholding of the district is a step forward for equitable representation in democracy, NAWL encourages steadfast vigilance in the pursuit of a fair electoral process. Read more about this decision here: https://lnkd.in/gFfXBJt8 Although this decision allows the congressional district to stand for the 2024 election cycle, its limited scope paves the way for what is sure to be additional challenges next term, including the potential to further erode the Voting Rights Act. NAWL will continue to advocate for fair electoral processes for all and for full restoration of the Voting Rights Act. Continue the conversation with NAWL during two upcoming events: On June 5, we'll conclude our Protecting the Vote, Protecting Democracy virtual series. https://lnkd.in/gy4nCMYY On July 24-25, through professional development sessions, creative networking opportunities, and substantive panels, our Annual Meeting will focus on the pivotal role of the right to vote in achieving equal rights for women. https://lnkd.in/gQDsEU-J 📷: The U.S. Supreme Court, Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images #NAWLWomeninLaw #NAWLAdvocacy #VotingRightsAct #SCOTUS
