Our Energy Transition Director Matt Browell-Hook was among the speakers at the EIYP Annual Young Professionals Dinner, alongside the ever-brilliant Steve Rae FEI, Director of Fortitude - Action Beyond Compliance, and Anna Maclaren, Marketing and Comms Manager at Energy Transition Zone and former EIYPN Co-chair. The EIYPN does amazing work, supporting young professionals across the region and such events provide a tremendous opportunity to hear from industry leaders as well as to network with fellow professionals. In his address, Matt shared his experiences as an energy industry engineer and had some wise words for the young professionals in the audience. He said: "In a time where our planet’s future depends on the choices we make, you are not just energy engineers; you are the stewards of the Earth’s most vital resources. Every day, you work on finding new, more sustainable ways to harness, store, and distribute energy that powers everything from our homes, to our industries, to our communities. You are the ones who ensure that light shines in our cities, that transportation continues to move, and that industries remain efficient—all while addressing one of humanity’s most pressing challenges: climate change. "The path ahead is complex. The solutions are not simple, and the scale of the challenges is enormous. We face a rapidly growing global demand for energy, the need for reducing emissions, the imperative of preserving natural ecosystems, and the transition to renewable sources. "In moments of difficulty or doubt, I want you to remember this: the work you do matters more than ever. Each calculation, each experiment, each design decision you make is part of a bigger picture — a picture that’s not just about making technology work but about making the future work. That’s the future of our planet, the future of our children, and the future of generations to come. You are the ones tasked with ensuring that the energy solutions we create today do not compromise the world we leave behind tomorrow." On Thursday 26th, I participated in a Panel Discussion as part of the Future Energy Summit at the University of Strathclyde’s Technology and Innovation Centre, an initial event presenting recommendations from the University’s collaboration with Scottish Power Energy Networks, Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks and the Energy Systems Operator. Some great insights provided by Sir Jim McDonald and Ofgem’s Steven McMahon, before hearing about the outputs from the collaborative work from Prof Colin Bell and then highly participative panel sessions and great input from Phil Beach of EU Skills.  Like other industrial sectors - attracting, developing and retaining the future workforce is an increasing challenge and with the massive investment in Energy Transmission & Distribution infrastructure over next 10 years, one that’s critical to the Scottish and UK Economy. A good range of action-oriented verbs in the recommendations – Align, Define, Create, Identify, Engage, Advocate, Attract, Explore & Communicate and broad agreement and commitment to develop a strong programme of work. But this will require a genuine national response, co-ordination and investment across the Public, Private and Education & Training Sector. I was honoured to address His Royal Highness Crown Price Haakon and President Stubb among invited guests in seminar organized in connection to President Stubb’s state visit to Norway. My remarks on “Twin Transition as a Growth Opportunity for Norway and Finland” seminar focused on energy transition and can be summarized as follows. Norway and Finland face great opportunities in the energy transition. Both countries are leaders in the technology development in many areas that are becoming increasingly important as the energy transition proceeds internationally. Strength relies in the broad spectrum of solutions we have to offer, but governments must be technology neutral and let the market select the winning technologies. There is a growing demand for these solutions and in the future flexible energy system is the direction every country in the world will be taking. The global potential for flexible energy systems will be significant – much larger than it is today. This provides us with export opportunities for the technologies and solutions developed and tested in our home markets. Our electricity systems are amongst the cleanest in Europe, with an opportunity to add more clean electricity production capacity. This presents us with a distinct competitive advantage in attracting electricity intensive industrial investments. However, the investors have to be very careful in order to understand, how much green premium the customers are prepared to pay at the end of the day. This may not by as much as some believe, at the moment. But, history teaches us that the time before a paradigm shift is often characterized by desperate attempts to save the old paradigm but when the paradigm changes, it always changes faster that anybody expected. Regarding industrial investments, there is also a delicate interplay: To attract industrial investments, there needs to be enough clean energy. And to be able to build new clean energy capacity, we need security of industrial investments to consume that energy. It is important to work towards the common goal together and it is delighted to see Norwegian-Finnish collaboration already progressing in many clean energy value chains. In batteries, there has been systematic collaboration, building a common ecosystem between Finland, Sweden and Norway already since 2021, facilitated by Business Finland, Innovation Norway and Business Sweden. This work has resulted in new contracts between companies of the three countries, new exports, talent attraction and investments into the value chain. "To achieve the net zero goal by 2050, Germany, Italy and France are estimated to account for the highest necessary [grid] investments. Investments in these three countries make up 50% of EU-wide distribution grid investments until 2050." At Cleantech for Italy, innovative grid technologies (IGTs) are at the core of our agenda. Massive investments are necessary to enhance the efficiency and security of our energy systems. This can only be achieved by combining grid expansion with modernisation and optimisation - and that's where IGTs step in. The new report on IGTs by Compass Lexecon and CurrENT Europe, supported by Breakthrough Energy , is a great resource for learning about the topic. Summer Challenge Meet Up: energy cooperatives   What is the role of energy cooperatives in the Dutch energy transition? How do energy cooperatives contribute to a fair energy transition with a crucial role being played by civilians, both in The Netherlands and in Europe? In what way can students help these cooperatives to make a bigger impact?   At the ‘Summer Challenge Energy cooperatives’ 5 teams of students will work on real life cases of Dutch energy cooperatives during one week (8-12 July). At the Summer Challenge Meet Up on the 9th of July, inspiring speakers will highlight the crucial role that energy cooperatives play in the energy transition. Everyone is welcome to join, learn and connect!   Line up: Siward Zomer (president at cooperative Energie Samen) will highlight the number and the variety of energy cooperatives, the impact they already have and the challenges they face. Joke Kort (scientist at TNO) researches the role of energy coops in the energy transition, arguing that their role in reaching the climate targets is indispensable. Besides that, they also help realising a fair distribution of gains and losses in the energy system. On August 30, 2024, the online seminar titled "Opportunities and Challenges for Chinese Energy Storage Companies Entering the Australian Market" was successfully held, co-organized by the China Energy Storage Alliance(CNESA) and the Australia Renewable Energy Association (AREA). The event brought together industry experts, Chinese energy storage companies' representatives, and key Australian market stakeholders. Out of the 200 delegates invited to the seminar, 190-ish participants were online for the entire 2-hour duration. This high level of engagement reflects the relevance and value of the insights shared during the event. Key Highlights: ❤️ Opening Speech: Representatives from CNESA and AREA delivered insightful opening remarks, emphasising the importance of fostering collaboration between the Chinese and Australian Energy Storage sectors. 💚 Market Overview and Trends: Lloyd Mao, Secretary-General of Australia Renewable Energy Association and Business Development Manager of Green Gold Energy Pty Ltd, provided an in-depth analysis of the Australian energy storage market, highlighting current trends and potential growth opportunities for Chinese companies. 🧡 Residential Energy Storage Systems: Gavin (Jian) Li, the founder of Energy Spurt, shared valuable case studies on the current status of the residential energy storage market in Australia, shedding light on consumer behaviour and adoption patterns. 💙 Commercial Energy Storage Systems: Jack Yang, the founder of Direct Solar Wholesaler Renewable Energy Group, discussed the market status and presented examples of commercial energy storage systems in Australia, offering practical insights for companies looking to enter this segment. 💚 Large-Scale Ground-Mounted Energy Storage Stations: Alessandro Wei, Engineering Manager at Green Gold Energy Pty Ltd, provided a comprehensive overview of Australia's large-scale energy storage projects, discussing the challenges and opportunities in this field. 💛 Interactive Q&A Session: The seminar concluded with an engaging 30-minute Q&A session, during which participants had the opportunity to interact with the speakers, ask questions, and discuss potential collaborations. The seminar served as a valuable platform for Chinese energy storage companies to better understand the Australian market. The discussions highlighted the significant potential for growth and cooperation between China and Australia in the #energy #storage sector, focused on navigating regulatory requirements, understanding market dynamics, and leveraging strategic partnerships. We look forward to continuing this dialogue and fostering stronger ties between the energy storage industries in China and Australia.
