Author. Speaker. Operations with Design, Complexity, and Philosophy Driven by Experience, Research, and Theory.
If you are interested in #wildfire, this document is worth a read (There is a Call to Action which I have not yet read). The letter opens with an accurate critique of our National Forests as being inadequately maintained. Later on, National Forests are referred to as being "clogged up with vegetation." This rings true but does not account for National Forests where brush fields are the norm, such as those in the Southern portion of Region Five and even extending up to the forests in the region's Northern half, such as the #Klamath with its Snow Brush and other species. The most efficient way to address this issue is with fire, which is advocated for in the letter provided it is prescribed. If what is intended here by "prescribed fire" are low-intensity controlled burns, that may not be sufficient to "unclog" the National Forests. However, a patchwork may be left behind, which may still not be enough to curb the risk. Feasibility should be considered in the design of this plan from the outset. By winding back the clock on wildfire policy, the number of acres burned will decrease, and as many argue (and have observed), over time, fire risk and intensity will increase in neighboring unburned areas. If that causality rings true, instances of prescribed fire will have to increase to keep pace before conditions worsen, supporting even more intense fires. When I hear about someone planning a robust prescribed fire strategy, key questions come to the fore, such as: "How are you going to hold it, and if the answer is #fireline, who is going to cut it ?" "Who is going to light and hold the burn? "Where will you get the qualifications from?" It cannot be forgotten that the workforce is seasonal. I have had the privilege of working on a fire that was being managed for resource benefit at the start of the season until certain trigger points were met and we engaged. It was not a big deal, just a lot of good decision-making. If the parameters line up and the intensity is appropriate for the landscape, backing off and gaining more acres will add further benefit. A point of contention is the notion that "backing off to the next ridge" is somehow universally nefarious. Every fire cannot be engaged with directly and aggressively. For example, what if you are in the Six Rivers National Forest, and the fire is five steep ridges and brush-filled drainages (that the authors do not want to burn) away from the nearest safety zone? You cannot ask a team to commit someone's son or daughter into that hole. So indirect fireline on ridges is the strategy, even if it takes more than one try before burning it out. It has been asserted elsewhere that IMTs are adding acres by going indirect at the height of fire season. While this could be possible, it is not coherent with National Preparedness Level 5, where resources are scarce and fire activity is up. I would like to see the Delegations of Authority and Incident Action Plans that align with these events. "
NWI just released this letter calling for a return to management and an end to irresponsible wildfire use at the height of fire season. I signed the letter along with over 70 other professional foresters and fire managers. Please read, share, and share your thoughts and experiences.

Best things made in Bristol. A non-sequential list. 🥛 Ribena 🍫 Chocolate 🏍 Detachable sidecars ⚽ John Atyeo 🌉 Clifton Suspension Bridge ⚖ Legal Tech in the South West conference 2024 Ok, the last one might not make the Top 6 for everyone. But it gave me lots of ideas to explore and new people to meet. Worth sharing and celebrating now: Manu Kanwar's statement that sometimes a "data diet" helps truth better than a data dump. Katy Snell's point to not get hyped on tech until there's a demonstrable use case. Elliot Fonte, Ant Perry at Arctic Wolf and James Arscott at Xerox with great insights about how far risk quantification and software diligence processes can evolve in order to be more efficient. Emily Cox showing (among many other clever things) that I am the last person you want to compete in the marshmallow challenge. Rhianne Armstrong using Darth Vader to emphasise the welcome trend towards understanding problems before rushing to solutions. Let me know in the comments things that you love about Bristol or Legal Tech in the South West. Or if you want me to flesh out any of the above. (My vote is for the detachable sidecar, if only for its high amount of quality cartoon moments.)
