I am so impressed by the students at #BarakaChildrensHome and the #BarakaPeaceBuildingSchool as they share their amazing #agriculturalprojects. This is a great time to appreciate the #CBCmodel of #education and what it offers to our children. Here are a few #benefits of the #CBC that I observed help students grow personally and gain important skills: ☑ 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑮𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒕𝒉: The CBC helps students become #independentlearners. They take responsibility for their learning, which builds their confidence and resilience. ☑ 𝑺𝒌𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕: Instead of just memorizing facts, CBC encourages students to learn by doing. They work on real-life projects that help them think critically and solve problems. ☑ 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕: Projects like those at Baraka teach students the value of helping their communities. By working on agricultural projects, they learn about sustainability and how to support food security. At Empowerment Alliance for Wellness, we believe in empowering young people through education and practical skills. Our focus on #nutrition and #agriculture aims to support programs that help youth develop their talents and make a positive difference in their communities. Today, Sadiq Khan has announced that if he was to be re-elected as Mayor he would permanently give every child in London a free school lunch. It means that every child - whatever their circumstances - will have the nutrition they need to thrive. A well-fed child is a happy, healthy, and eager learner. And - guess what - their grades are better, their attendance is up, and they go on to get better jobs and have a brighter future. Working alongside Jamie at The Jamie Oliver Group, within an organisation that prioritises children's well-being is a privilege - especially today. Detracting nothing from the amazingness of this announcement, it’s hard to articulate just how brilliant this is without remembering that even with all children in London being included, many more aren’t. Ensuring every child has access to nutritious meals is a goal we must all champion, not just in London but across the nation. It’s not just the right thing to do, it makes sense too. So who else, where else, is there the political bravery to step up and put children first? Today, on United Nations International Day of Education, we celebrate that education is key to achieving all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and are proud of our contribution through our education pillar to achieving SDG 4 – Quality Education. Every day, we see firsthand the power of education, as a crucial part of addressing the root causes of food insecurity, food waste, and good nutrition. By equipping people with knowledge and skills, we’re empowering individuals and communities to break the cycle of dependency and create lasting change. Here’s a snapshot of OzHarvest’s three education programs driving impact across Australia: 🍳 Our NEST program teaches vulnerable people how to cook nutritious and affordable meals, creating community connections and improving food security. Last year , we ran nearly 900 sessions, empowering over 1,700 participants.    📖 FEAST is our free curriculum aligned program for primary and high school students to reduce food waste, make positive food choices and inspire them to be future change-makers! Over 1,400 schools are enrolled, with over 80,000 students empowered to take action for a better future.     🥬 Our youth program Nourish™ equips young people facing barriers to education with life skills, hospitality training, and pathways to employment. To date, over 300 students have graduated with a Certificate II in Cookery, and many returning to education or securing meaningful jobs.  Every day we see the profound impact our programs have on communities, from students to teachers like Emily Duff from Sunbury Heights Primary School. Emily has seen firsthand how FEAST transformed her students’ lives: “Even the most disengaged students are now excited to attend school, cooking at home, and eager to become role models. In this MEAL Essentials Curriculum, I delved into the core principles, practices, and tools of effective Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) in humanitarian and development work. This curriculum available on DisasterReady aligns with the globally recognized MEAL DPro Guide and provides invaluable insights into strengthening MEAL systems for impactful programs. 🌍 Accelerating Collaboration and Commitments for School Meals in ASEAN+3 🍎 Exciting news! From November 18-20, 2024, in Siem Reap, Cambodia, the Royal Governments of Cambodia and the Philippines will co-chair the Regional School Meals Summit, aiming to scale up school meal programs across ASEAN+3 countries. Amy Bellinger, The Learning Generation Initiative's Director of Programs, is moderating a panel and workshop on financing of school meals, Hélène Gourichon Koziel is also attending to discuss school meals financing strategies with countries in ASEAN. Key goals: ✅ Showcase Commitments: Highlight regional successes in school meals and share best practices to drive further investments. ✅ Foster Collaboration: Strengthen partnerships and cross-sectoral dialogue between ASEAN+3 governments and key stakeholders. ✅ Develop a Unified Position: Establish a shared vision for school meals in the region, feeding into global discussions in 2025. With over 55 million children benefiting from school meals in the region, there's immense potential to reach even more. PYP Units of Inquiry promotes students agency by giving students opportunities to present about their research and findings. This time, our Grade one students explored food in different continents around the world. They shared their inquiry into the questions: How does the location of a place determine the kinds of food people eat? How do people experience culture through food while traveling? Our amazing parents prepared foods around the world for our students to enjoy. Inquiry, researching, presentation, and action - eating food!
