In 2020, CHCF launched a targeted effort to improve health care, and thus health outcomes, for Black Californians regardless of their income or the type of insurance coverage they have. This approach recognizes the impacts of anti-Black racism on the health of Black Californians across income and socioeconomic class. See our current request for proposals (RFP), which solicits projects that address anti-Black racism in the health care system. CHCF seeks to support five to eight projects that have the potential to accelerate change in delivery system policies and practices in the near term. Applicants may apply for grants of up to $150,000 for a two-year grant period to implement and assess the impact of efforts to improve equitable medical care for Black Californians in public or private clinics, hospitals, and medical practices. There is room to acknowledge the growing body of research around the impact of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) on metabolic and gut health without resorting to classist, ableist, or anti-fat rhetoric. The concern about UPF consumption appears to be primarily directed at individuals who are higher-weight, low-income or homeless, disabled, and non-white. This aligns with a historical pattern of attempting to control the bodies and food choices of those deemed 'less than' by society. These tropes have consistently appeared throughout US history over the past few centuries. A weight, therefore, body-inclusive approach to discussions about UPFs requires a clear analysis of how colonialism and supremacy beliefs and structures are reflected in our language and policy development. As a current board member overseeing the quality of CHVP course content, I am fully engaged in taking the course myself. Today, I had an AHA moment regarding Texas municipalities, school districts, tribal entities, religious entities, and MEWAS being ERISA exempt and subject to state law regulation. Specifically, Texas House Bill 2002 could empower these entities to demand that certain exam costs be applied to deductibles and that BUCAs accept accumulators. Do you have a different perspective on this conclusion? Yesterday's second annual New Hampshire Center for Justice & Equity meeting was both sobering and inspiring. In small breakout groups, we had an opportunity to give input and to discuss the key priorities for the upcoming year around health care, economic development, education and criminal justice reform. The Center and its allies have made a lot of progress, and there is so much more to come. It's clear; change needs to happen systemically. Experts walked us through how bills get passed to law in NH and offered us examples of ones that pass with strong community support and ones that pass with strong community objection. Some key takeaways:  - Bills require both courage and patience. A great example of this is passing of the Medicaid Expansion Act until 2030.  - We need to be willing to fail, until we eventually succeed.  - Lifting people up doesn't mean we're pushing others down.  - We need to play both offense and defense. Push forward new agendas, but work to keep what's already in place. An example of defending what we have is protecting same day voter registration. - While we need to be willing to fail, we also need to be willing to succeed. Together, let's stay hopeful.  - Commit to having diverse voices at the table, especially around policy and decision making. Thanks Dwight Davis for leading us with incredible grace and poise.
