I'm not saying Sugarloaf Island isn't a natural or recreational asset, but I do have some questions about this article. 1) How is this a barrier island if it has Atlantic Beach blocking the ocean from it? 2) How is this protecting or creating access to coastal resources when it's installing a concrete wall that boaters can't get past? 3) Why are we continuing to pile up concrete (and granite elsewhere) along our shorelines and call it preservation or restoration? 4) When are we going to address the root problem behind sea level rise at the local level?

Should we be looking deeper into Mosiac, TimberWest, Island Timberlands, and Western Forest Products? After going over the Vancouver Island rail corridor prospects including the potential revenues from both freight and various types of passenger services being proposed, and the fact that trails can, and are, built next to the tracks, I've always been a little perplexed as to why the Nations, being 50-50 owners of the corridor, aren't screaming out publicly to restore the tracks. As I look deeper into this, I found articles online talking about First Nations litigation with the Private forestry companies that now own the land that was part of the Dunsmuir land grab. As you know, when law suits are underway the parties cannot talk about it publicly, and since the E&N railway was the bargaining chip for the land grant in the first place, it's bound to be linked to any ongoing legal challenges related to the stolen lands. Western Forest Products, a company that owns around 24,000 hectares of it has been selling off land to developers because they've depleting the forestry resource value of the property for decades to come. The Nations clearly have issue with that. Then of course there's Mosaic, a company that manages around 600,000 hectares of that land on behalf of TimberWest and Island Timberlands. It's not just the indigenous communities affected, in fact, all the citizens on Vancouver Island have been locked out of these lands as gates were put up on logging roads preventing what used to be a "Right to roam" on them. I personally used to camp on those lands during the summer, but not any more as the way is now blocked. New highway lanes, dedicated bus lanes, or even new railway projects expropriate property from private citizens without hesitation. It seems to me that what might be happening is that the Government is adverse to expropriating these lands from private companies for the sake of Vancouver Island's future. As I discover more, I'll share it, follow me for updates. https://chng.it/HTPJ25CqPr All Aboard! https://lnkd.in/gy9WBzcw #reconcilation #railways #transit #vancouverisland #britishcolumbia #canada #connection #transportation

Quidnessett Country Club's illegally built wall has been up for over 400 days since a cease and desist order was presented to the country club on August 28, 2023. CRMC staff have recommended denying Quidnessett’s petition to change the water type classification, a move that, if approved, could allow the illegally built wall to stand. We side with the coastal scientists and engineers who make the following arguments about the detrimental effects of a structural wall in the area: -The shoreline area in the proposal is particularly unsuitable for structures due to the area’s exposure to severe wave action and erosion, which could potentially lead to further erosion and loss of coastal beach and lateral access beyond the area of proposed reclassification. -The long-term resiliency of the coastal wetland and tidal marsh will be reduced, accelerating habitat loss, including for the state-endangered and protected diamondback terrapin. Today is World Wetlands Day, which is celebrated to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands. This year’s campaign emphasizes the interconnectedness between wetlands and human life and encourages everyone to value and protect these ecosystems. Weaver’s experienced wetland professionals are dedicated to finding practical solutions for projects affecting wetlands and all that inhabit them. Check out the project below, where we completed wetland delineations, habitat determinations, and floristic quality assessments in two areas of land owned by a landfill facility. Based on the results, we prepared wetland restoration plans to compensate for the loss of habitats due to a planned landfill expansion. Wetland habitats, tallgrass prairie, and forested buffers have been created using native trees and herbaceous vegetation, on which we perform annual monitoring to ensure the success of the mitigation efforts. #worldwetlandsday #wetlands
