“Much of the litter […]is fairly directly caused by the massive secession or exclusion of most of our people from active participation in the food economy.” -Wendell Berry, farmer and novelist, in „What Are People For?” p.127. This month on Hospitality Net World Panel on Sustainability in Hospitality: Waste Not, Want Not: Food as a Major Sustainability Lever? (https://lnkd.in/eRR8SqNe) The aim is to combine two topics: eliminating food waste + transforming diets as these could work as major levers of socio-economic, climate and biodiversity improvements. With this in mind, Maribel Esparcia Pérez and I are asking: -When it comes to reducing or eliminating food being wasted and transforming diets, what holds us back? Keeping in mind that many people state that they want to lead a more sustainable lifestyle, yet when it comes down to it, they do not make any substantial changes to their actions. Many hospitality managers are well-intentioned but fail to implement meaningful changes at property-level. Important note: The recent UN Environment Programme Food Waste Index Report 2024 (https://lnkd.in/ema7yGaS) stresses the substantial data gaps in the quantification of the food waste in the food service sector and that “these unknown quantities could be substantial” (p. XVI). Colleagues at Linnaeus University, Sweden and The University of Queensland Brisbane are preparing a food & emissions project and require data (see post here https://lnkd.in/e6za9VYg) – if you are a hotel/restaurant owner or manager or you are a researcher and work with hospitality companies, it’s time to have a clearer picture on the industry’s impacts – please contact Stefan Gössling. For now, a special thanks to our panel experts; Carlos Martin-Rios, Jerome Pagnier, Natasha Montesalvo, Glenn Mandziuk MEDes. MCIP FRSA, Federico Vignati, Sandi Lesueur, Swantje Lehners, Brooke Hansen, Marc Lores Panades, Dr Jonathon Day, Johanna Wagner, Andreas Koch and Adam Maclennan. It's definitely worth the read here with so many hints on best practices including very operational actions. #foodwaste #sustainableliving #changingdiet #sustainability #hospitality #hospitalityindustry #hospitalitynet #worldpanel

This is an interesting article around sustainable food procurement for the Public Sector. The more locally to you that your food is produced, the fresher and more sustainable it is likely to be. Why settle for British as being local, when the UK mainland is some 800+ road miles long!? Support your local community, reduce road miles, reduce your GHG emissions and enjoy fantastic local food. West Country Milk is proud to support locally produced 'natural food', farmed sustainably. Surely the best kind of food you can buy! You can see the full publication here https://lnkd.in/dNztvcsc

In the UK, 35% of adults grow their own herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Does that mean the other 65% can't eat sustainably? 🤷 While this might seem like a silly assumption, it reflects a common misconception about environmentally conscious consumption. Many people, juggling various priorities, believe that better eating is: 💰 Too expensive ⏰ Too time-consuming 🤢 Too tasteless This mindset often leads to an all-or-nothing approach. People think that if they can't do something like growing their own vegetables, there's no point in trying at all. This action gap continues to hinder progress toward a more sustainable food system. In reality, we need millions of people making small changes to their habits rather than a few people making radical shifts. We created the Reewild app to help individuals realise that eating more sustainably is easily achievable, and possible without compromise. We want to show people that they can still enjoy delicious meals while saving time, money, and carbon. 🍝 By changing the narrative around sustainable eating, and inspiring small actions among many, we can make a world of difference. 🌍 (Photo of me and my balcony garden, my first attempt at growing potatoes 🥔) Link to check out the Reewild app in the comments! #reewild #sustaianbleeating #behaviourchange

🌍 Happy World Food Day! 🌱 As a nutritionist and food scientist, I am constantly reminded of the crucial role that sustainable food systems play in shaping a healthier, more equitable future. With the expected increase in global population by 2050, the need to address food waste and efficiency in our food systems has never been more urgent. On this day, I want to emphasize that each of us has a role to play in building a sustainable food future. From reducing food waste in our homes, to supporting innovative companies that are driving change through sustainable packaging and food redistribution efforts, we can all contribute to a more resilient food system. It’s heartening to see entrepreneurs and startups stepping up with creative solutions, turning waste into opportunity, and ensuring that no food goes to waste. Their work is a beacon of hope as we confront the challenge of feeding our growing world. On this World Food Day, let’s commit to making conscious choices about how we consume, produce, and preserve food. Whether it’s starting your own sustainable initiative, supporting local farmers, or making simple lifestyle changes — every action matters. Let’s work together for a more sustainable, food-secure world. 🌾🍽️ #WorldFoodDay #Sustainability #FoodWaste #Nutrition #FoodScience #Innovation
