Mondelēz International recently published their 'State of snacking' report for 2023. There were some interesting points to take away. Snacking is a huge part of our daily lives with 88% of consumers surveyed stating they indulge in snacking daily. Consumers are looking for snacking options that support their more health-conscious and wellbeing goals. It's important to identify that nutrition needs are not one size fits all and snacks need to represent this. 65% of consumers are seeking snacks that allow for personalisation such as adding preferred flavours or ingredients. As well as being a source of nutrition, snacks are also a source of fun and adventure for many consumers. This is interesting from an NPD point of view as new snack concepts need to continue to evolve, be innovative and mirror trends. Sustainability is something that can't be avoided in the snacks market. 2/3 of global consumers agree that they often choose brands that align with their morals, fuelling a need for more sustainable snacks. The global appetite for plant based snacks has also increased with 57% of consumers trying to eat less meat and 46% trying to consume less dairy. Convenient, on-the-go snacking has become a popular replacement for mealtimes.  Almost half (48%) of consumers globally consume over two snacks a day, according to a new report from HealthFocus International.   But as consumers have shifted when they eat, they have also changed how they eat. The shifting sentiment around snacking and healthy eating overall has led food manufacturers to be more thoughtful on the ingredients they include. The HealthFocus International report found that people approach snacks with the same scrutiny as their meal choices, expecting healthier options, even in indulgent categories. CPG has had an interesting shift in the past two years, especially regarding the snack category and the sentiment around "healthy" eating. Nearly half of consumers don’t have consistent patterns for when and how much they eat, highlighting the importance of healthy snacks to fill this need space. Globally, 45% are approaching snacks with the goal of finding the healthiest options available, while 38% take a more balanced approach saying they allow themselves indulgent snacks as part of an overall healthy diet. For my fellow parents out there, we tend to lean heavier on the first statistic as our children become more consumed by snack culture and sometimes (unwillingly) rely on snacks as meal replacements. There's been a surge in legacy snack brands touting "made with vegetables" or "hidden vegetables" on the packaging - yet when you look at the nutrient panel and ingredient list, there are barely traces of vegetable powder or extracts listed. While it's exciting to see legacy brands strive for "healthier" alternatives and more organic offerings, our industry as a whole has a long way to go. It’s worth talking about the economic challenges we are facing because times of economic stress can make healthy eating habits less prevalent. Is this setback alarming for the healthy food evolution? Not really. When short-term economic challenges are discounted, healthy food still gains importance very quickly. In the UK for example, 68% of consumers claim to be eating healthily all or most of the time.
