Field Service Technician- 3M Fall Protection - Engineered Systems Trainer U.S. & Canada 3M Fall Protection
Field Service is not easy, many times I doubted myself along the way. Remember, the job is not about impressing others it's about getting the job done right the first time. When I managed other in field service everybody had a special skill different from everybody else, but the one thing that made a difference is looking at the work ethic, I could teach a tech skills they lacked, but work ethic needs to come from inside the person. So if your supervisor is not impressed by you, more than likely it has more to do with your knowledge or skill set. So be a hard worker, responsible, and have be self motivated. That where it starts, then employ all the above suggestions in this link.

One of the best articles I have read on my industry. Glad I have entered the “IT” side of it now as when I was a technician the pay structure and work/life balance was subpar. Most technicians make the same or close to a entry level fast food workers wages and we are essentially responsible for life’s and your transportation reliability. I like to explain it as being a Dr. but with vehicles instead of humans and the knowledge and tools are worth a premium. One of the biggest reasons i left that side of the industry is growth opportunity is very slim, your only options are to grow as a technian into a specialty role or master and rarely to something like a service manager. https://lnkd.in/gDQesAQ3

I hire for culture first, and skills second. Regardless of the position: - a technician - a specialist - an admin I’m always looking for whether they have the personality and aptitudes that would be a good fit for our culture. - Will they work hard? - Will they treat our clients well? - Will they go the extra mile in service delivery? - Do they love to have fun? Skills are dependent on the position. Some skills are caught on the job, and some skills are taught (meaning they need to know before joining us). For example: an admin isn’t going to have to need a lot of experience or skills pre-hire. A technician on the other hand, better come with the skills and experience to get the job done. Hiring can be difficult, but if you have your values and what you’re looking for determined beforehand, it makes the process so much easier. Do you hire for skills or for culture? If both, how do they relate to each other?
