🤩 Our next featured #HumansofPAPSN is Richard Foy. Richard is part of our PAPSN Strategic Committee and will be speaking at an upcoming webinar “Ethnic Leadership in New Zealand’s Public Sector – Current and Future” on Tue 18 Jun (🔗 Register here: https://lnkd.in/gvcKmbpS). Richard shares with us his ‘why’ and what PASPN means to him. ❓𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒐 𝒋𝒐𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒄 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓? I originally joined the public sector because I wanted to apply my skills (at that time, information technology-based) to solving problems faced by Aotearoa New Zealand...and I thought public service would be the best place to do this. I've since found my skills are imminently transferrable and useful in the public sector and in the various (and diverse) roles I've taken. 💟 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑷𝑨𝑷𝑺𝑵 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖? PAPSN has helped me open up and connect with a very particular part of my own identity through connection with this community. That personal part is my ethnic Chinese identity stemming from my family heritage and history here in Aotearoa New Zealand. The PAPSN aspect enables me to see my identity and place as an individual within a greater community of Pan Asians who are also just trying to find their place and space in this public service. It hasn't (and isn't) always a comfortable or easy place to find oneself, which is why allies and friends within the network is helpful! 💭 𝑨𝒏𝒚 𝒂𝒅𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑷𝑨𝑷𝑺𝑵 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚? Get involved! PAPSN is an employee-led network that depends on its network members to participate and contribute. It's voluntary and outside of your day-to-day mahi, but it's supported by Te Kawa Mataaho Public Service Commission, so you're all good to go! Getting involved means attending events (and networking!) and volunteering to help make events and activities happen for our community. Put your hand up, offer to help...you'll get a lot out of it, and usually much more than you put in. #identity #EthnicLeadership #Diversity #PublicSector #network #NewZealand

Have you got your pitch ready for Talk It Up? 🤔 In the build-up to the hottest unconference of the year, we're sharing some content that has got us thinking and talking… A few weeks ago we asked ‘How can we better assess and improve Council-Community Relationships?’ Which was inspired by the 'Powering up communities to deliver local wellbeing' report that was developed by Inspiring Communities for Western Bay of Plenty District Council. This report looks at six locally-led initiatives doing amazing things to enable well-being. The report shares these case studies and advice on how Councils can more effectively support and partner with local anchor organisations in our communities. It's packed full of practical suggestions and gold nuggets. Here are just a few questions it prompted for us: · What are the Council rules and practices that get in the way of the community doing good, and how can we shift them? · Outcomes vs outputs - how do we shift the conversations to enable community groups in ways that are meaningful for them? · What systems do we have in place within the Council to support collaboration with community groups? · How do we measure the quality of relationships? Did this pique your interest? Dive into the report for more detail (link in comments) and pitch your questions as a session at Talk It Up! 17 and 18 October, Ōtautahi Christchurch - get your tickets at http://talkitup.nz before 30 Sept.

Unlocking the Power of Social Network Analysis (SNA) 🔓 Have you ever considered how your network influences progress? I recently came across an enlightening article on Social Network Analysis (SNA) by Gregory Saxton, and it has changed my perspective! SNA visually maps our connections, revealing influential figures, resource flows, and potential areas for network strengthening. It highlights not just who is connected, but which relationships drive action and collaboration. A study by Blanchet & James (2012) highlighted this whilst examining the social network of eye care providers in Ghana. They found out that after the departure of an International Health Organization (IHO), many key players vanished. Their departure altered relationships and reduced the network's resilience to sharing of resources and information. This change emphasized the IHO's vital role in creating connections within the healthcare system. What resonates with me is the significance of every individual within the network. SNA is transformative. It is a valuable tool for enhancing relationships and identifying areas of improvement. It is vital in public policy formulation, team building, and fostering collaboration, particularly in achieving the SDGs. Curious about how SNA can elevate your network? Interested in personal growth or exploring how your connections shape opportunities? Let’s connect and share insights! 💬 #SocialNetworkAnalysis #SNA #TeamBuilding #Collaboration #PersonalGrowth #OrganizationalDevelopment Image Credit: Gregory D. What’s Your Experience with Habit #4: Networking to Build Genuine Partnerships with Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations? For non-Aboriginal Liaisons, forming partnerships with Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) requires trust, respect, and long-term commitment. These partnerships aren’t just transactions—they’re built on reciprocity and shared goals. Partnerships with an ACCO Let's learn from James, a non-Aboriginal Liaison, who was delegated the tasked of improving mental health access in a regional area. He knew working with the local ACCO was key to making a real difference. Initially, James focused on project deadlines and deliverables. However after meeting the ACCO's CEO, Aunty Marion, he realised partnerships couldn’t be rushed. “We work at the pace of trust,” she said. James listened, listened to differnet people from the organisation, and learned about the ACCO’s priorities. Together, they worked on and co-designed a culturally safe program. By the end of the first stage, the ACCO saw results that worked for their community members. James had started the trust building journey, paving the way for future collaborations. Why Partnerships with ACCOs Matter ACCOs have long term connections to their communities and provide services grounded in local cultural knowledge. For non-Aboriginal Liaisons, partnering with ACCOs means respecting their expertise and working together to achieve long-term outcomes. Successful partnerships prioritise trust, reciprocity, and community leadership. For example, health projects led by ACCOs ensure that Elders and leaders guide decisions, creating shared success rather than one-sided interventions. Three Tips for Partnering with ACCOs 1. Dedicate time to understanding the ACCO’s goals and attending their events. Relationships take time and are vital for meaningful collaboration. 2. Communicate clearly and align your objectives with the ACCO’s priorities. Transparency fosters trust. 3. Celebrate milestones together. Recognising the ACCO’s contributions strengthens relationships and reinforces mutual respect. What’s Your Next Step? Reflect on how your organisation approaches partnerships with Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations. Are your collaborations built on trust and shared goals? Share your experiences in the comments below. Let’s learn together how to foster genuine, impactful partnerships. #Leadership #DiversityAndInclusion #IndigenousLeadership #WorkplaceEquity #Transformation

It was truly a phenomenal experience to be part of the recently held strategy session by the Red Cross Kahvila which took place in Kajaani, Finland. While acknowledging the success, traction and impact of the previous year, the session also provided an outline on the different activities and programs scheduled to take place this year. The session was also an avenue to look at what worked, what Is working, what needs to be improved on and what needs to be changed completely. As a platform that is working in close collaboration with the Finnish Red Cross - Suomen Punainen Risti , Red Cross Kahvila creates the environment for intercultural cooperation, community integration, networking, social interaction, training and community development. This year is filled with engaging activities and we look forward to building more partnerships and upholding more communal collaboration. To our continued success. 📸 David Ubani/ Finnish Red Cross - Suomen Punainen Risti Finnish Red Cross - Suomen Punainen Risti International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC Kajaanin kaupunki - City of Kajaani Maria Wuetter Visit Finland #CommunityDevelopment #SocialImpact #Integration #Networking #Communication #interaction #Opportunities
