🐘 Happy World Elephant Day! Did you know that there are actually three different species of elephants? African savanna elephants get the most attention, but there are also African forest elephants and Asian elephants. Recently I had the chance to catch up with Nilanga Jayasinghe about the attributes that make Asian elephants unique, the threats they face, and how we can all be allies in helping to save them. Two articles dropped into my inbox today which together highlight the "rock and a hard place" where many #indigenous and tribal peoples we work with find themselves. This first one - indigenous and tribal peoples must be moved on so the resources they are protecting can be exploited. #indigenouspeoples #conservation https://lnkd.in/eWVSNygW

The Conundrum of Human-Tiger Conflict in Nepal The population of Bengal tigers in Nepal has nearly tripled in the last 12 years. While this is a moment of global celebration for wildlife conservation, the increasing number of fatal attacks on humans by tigers has raised significant concerns. In 2010, Nepal had 121 tigers, which increased to 355 by 2022. Although tiger conservation efforts have been effective, the conflict between humans and tigers has escalated. Factors such as a shortage of prey, habitat destruction, and encroachment into forest areas have intensified this conflict. Chitwan National Park houses the highest number of tigers in Nepal, with 128 individuals. Similarly, Bardiya has 125 tigers. Additionally, there are 25 tigers in Banke, 41 in Parsa, and 36 in Shuklaphanta. The significant increase in tiger population is attributed to effective measures such as controlling poaching, habitat conservation and management, expansion of national parks, and the creation of wildlife corridors with India. According to the National Trust for Nature Conservation, 68 people have died in tiger attacks across the country in the last six years. The data shows that 10 people died in fiscal year 2080/81 and 12 in 2079/80 due to tiger attacks. #Tiger #TigerDay #Wildlife #VideoReport Kantipur Television Network Pvt. Decades of US funded Israeli war crimes & brutal racist oppression is why even Israel’s ex-Security Chief, Ami Ayalon, & ex-Israeli PM & General, Ehud Barak, BOTH say IF THEY WERE PALESTINIAN THEY WOULD FIGHT ISRAEL BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE THEIR LIBERTY: lnkd.in/guNE7vay If you’re confused about why they would say that, it’s obviously because they know the truth & you don’t. Even the ex-head of Israel’s Mossad (their CIA), calls Israel an apartheid state. Tamir Pardo, appointed by Netanyahu, said “There is an apartheid state here. In a territory where two people are judged under two legal systems, that is an apartheid state.” lnkd.in/gF_2dqvM. And here is Miko Peled, ex-Israeli special forces & son of an Israeli general who fought in the 1948 war, explaining how this conflict was really started by Israel’s premeditated ethnic cleansing of Muslim & Christian Palestinians in 1948, to create a sustainable Jewish majority. Peled is also the grandson of one of Israel’s founders, Avraham Katsnelson: lnkd.in/geiy3_5s How many whistleblowers do you need to believe them? If you still doubt that Israel is a brutal apartheid state after listening to them & the hundreds more Israeli soldiers, professors, & journalists that I've aggregated on this YouTube channel lnkd.in/g9KFXxMr, then you simply aren't being honest. I will continue advocating for peaceful resistance & Palestinians have been trying to protest peacefully for decades, but when they do, Israeli soldiers shoot them in the knees, kill them, or at least imprison & beat them. If you don't believe it, please read this 2020 Haaretz article titled: '42 Knees in One Day': Israeli Snipers Open Up About Shooting Gaza Protesters: lnkd.in/g4VqQRzs And if you still believe the lie that Israel has offered Palestinians many generous peace deals that they keep rejecting, read this article: lnkd.in/g2_EV6dV And this article explains how Israel has always been able to beat Hamas without killing children: lnkd.in/gY98T9mc I also cry for the 38 Israeli children & others killed on Oct 7th, but this horrible conflict did NOT start on that day. The proof is the nearly 2300 Palestinian children Israeli soldiers & settlers killed between 2000 & Oct 2023, including 43 children during the 9 months just before Oct 7th (all names & details on BTselem.org). Israel has also continued stealing more Palestinian homes & farms EVERY YEAR as part of its brutal 57 year apartheid & has imposed a brutal blockade of Gaza since 2005. ALL illegal under international law, immoral, & ongoing acts of war. And now Israel is committing genocide with the weapons WE keep giving them & has now killed OVER 25,000 WOMEN & CHILDREN (~70% of the dead), & MORE EVERY DAY. That's according to The Pentagon: lnkd.in/gaMEPKSn PLEASE WRITE & CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES to demand they stop helping Israel kill & starve children, commit war crimes, & maintain its brutal & racist apartheid, with our tax dollars & U.N. veto protection.

All Rise are one of the applicants in this important case. Read about it here 👇🏻 🔵 Background: On 17 May 2024, Wild Coast communities and supporting organisations will be in the Supreme Court of Appeal to defend the groundbreaking High Court judgment which set aside Shell’s exploration right - which provided for Shell to explore for oil and gas off the wild coast of South Africa. The appeal was brought by Shell, Impact Africa, and the Minister of Minerals and Energy. 🗝️Key takeaways from the High Court Judgment that found against Shell: 〰️There was no meaningful consultation with communities, and consulting traditional leadership only is not sufficient. 〰️Because there was no definitive information on the harms to the environment, when deciding whether to grant the exploration right, the Minister should have used a precautionary approach. 〰️The judgment acknowledged the key role of the ocean in the livelihoods and spiritual and cultural life of coastal communities. The harms to these religious and ancestral beliefs and practices should have been taken into account. 〰️Had the Minister taken the issues of climate change and right to food into account, he may have found that the project was “neither needed nor desirable”. 〰️The Integrated Coastal Management Act needed to be considered in the decision-making process. 〰️The Minister had shown himself to be biased in favour of Shell. 〰️Shell’s Environmental Management Programme (EMPr) contained statements promising jobs and increased government revenue. However, these claims were not supported by evidence in the EMPr. 〰️In granting the appeal the court found that, while it could see no prospects of success for the appeal, it would grant leave to appeal because issues of such public importance should be heard before the higher courts. #SaveTheWildCoast #OceansNotOil #JusticeWillPrevail #ShellSCA #ToHellwithShell #ClimateJusticeNOW
The #SCA must uphold the judgment to #SaveTheWildCoast b/c decision makers & #Shell failed to 🗣️meaningfully consult affected communities 🌍consider harm to fishers’ livelihoods, cultural & spiritual rights 🙏 ❌consider #climatechange 📜respect the ocean as an ecosystem #SaveTheWildCoast #OceansNotOil #JusticeWillPrevail #ShellSCA #ToHellwithShell

This is a showcase of the power of open mapping data with support from Earth Observation data — a true testament to the common idiom “Space for humans on Earth.” There’s only so much that governments can do to stop technology from empowering people in communities before they start fighting back. In this case, any escalation will be well-backed by evidence of recorded land rights which is miles ahead of fighting over rights that are not documented. This is in tandem with our discussion yesterday with Letwin Pondo and others at Ladies In Maps Zimbabwe. We emphasized the importance of translating open mapping data into policy making tools and in particular highlighting the crucial role open mapping can play in protecting land rights for marginalized communities including rural women. PS: It would be interesting to see such unfold in Zimbabwe and other parts of Africa where indigenous customary communities’ land rights are continuously under the threat of desecration from foreign mining and agricultural companies. #land #rights #mapping #osm #space #satelliteimagery #earthobservation

It's been eye-opening to dive headfirst back into the world of academia these last four weeks to do some in-depth research into management strategies for environmental issues that aren't so "Western-centric". The main thing I have noticed when comparing sustainability initiatives, legislation, policies, etc between less developed and more developed countries is that, we (being more developed in Australia) tend to consider what resources within the global commons can do for us; what these resources owe us, for existing in our territory, as opposed to less developed countries with ideologies around how to use what is already available, and has traversed the same territory for eons, long before people. The legal implications of recognised personhood in the hopes it can protect vital ecosystems is a fascinating consideration that could potentially force more developed countries to consider other creative means of managing environmental issues and could aid in the reframing of discourse regarding shared global environmental problems. I look forward to learning more about this.
I haven't seen much of this in our domestic news, but cool to see an indigenous-led declaration of legal personhood for Whales. This is an expression of rangatiratanga and also an interesting use of an established legal idea to recognise traditional knowledge about Whales. I will follow with interest as to whether this translates into State law and policy both in Aotearoa and across the Pacific. At a simple level, I really hope it helps to protect vulnerable marine mammals. #legalpersonhood #rangatiratanga #whales https://lnkd.in/gMwKqbiY
