What are the current threats to urban forested natural areas? And what tools exist to preserve and protect them? These are the questions that we explore in our latest land protections report, with the help of case studies from the #ForestsinCities network. Throwforward Thursday 142: Water Wars As the world gets more and more water stressed, those who control water supplies in rivers, lakes and dams, will exercise more power and restrict access to water to those downstream. This could lead to conflict - legal and physical - that is both internal and crosses national boundaries. Some countries may even use the need for water as a reason to invade a neighbour. Whether as an individual or a business, or a region or country, we need to have a plan for water security that is equitable, agreed on by everyone, and future proof. We cannot live without water. #ThrowForwardThursday #TFT #scenarios #water #waterwars #security #future

Hi Washingtonians! It's that time of year where we must start thinking about what's on the November ballot. There are a number of ballot initiatives this year I encourage you to learn about: I-2117 (climate commitment act repeal), I-2109 (capital gains tax repeal), and I-2124 (weakening long-term care). If these pass, we lose. I-2117 would repeal one of our strongest climate laws. The Climate Commitment Act is a "cap-and-invest" system that limits greenhouse gas emissions from major polluters and invests its revenues in wildfire prevention, transit services, Tribal nations, clean energy, environmental justice, and more. Repealing it means we lose a substantial amount of funding for these services and communities, and polluting industries will be held much less accountable for climate change. I-2109 is a tax cut for the wealthiest 0.2% of Washingtonians. Repealing it means we lose funding for childcare and education. I-2124 would eliminate Washington’s long-term care insurance program. Repealing it means sending more people into debt when they're faced with expensive long-term care bills and private insurance premiums they can't afford. Please vote "No" on these initiatives!
We can’t afford I-2117 this November. If it passes, it would allow more pollution and cut critical investments in programs that lower costs for Washingtonians and support clean air & water, wildfire prevention, transit service, road projects, Tribal nations, and salmon habitat. See what’s at stake in your county with this interactive tool, and vote #NoOn2117 https://lnkd.in/g5ATwiGi

When communities experience disasters, ensuring that everyone can recover and reducing the risk of future threats are just as important as thriving economically. Tricia Wachtendorf and James Kendra call on policymakers to take action in protecting the most vulnerable populations before, during, and after a disaster. Very interesting discussion on the panel on Section 423 claims. Some difficult questions of extra territorial efficacy need to be considered. #FIRE #firestarters ThoughtLeaders4 FIRE | TL4FIRE
