Did you know that ~40% of water supplied by Urban Local Bodies in cities is wasted due to leakages, theft, and inefficiencies? This strains urban water systems, citizens have reduced per capita supply and ULBs cannot generate adequate revenue. We are exploring the problem and how innovative technologies can significantly impact water management and sustainability. Thanks Jillian Bolton and Neil Delaney for the providing the foresight on the challenges in meeting our growing water supply needs for growing populations, changing needs and an ever changing climate. Really enjoyed working with Neil Delaney on this article for the latest eolas Magazine issue, where we considered our perspectives on global trends in water supply resilience. What we are seeing globally reinforces the requirement for all countries, even those like Ireland with low national water stress levels, to maximise opportunities to ensure long-term sustainable and resilient water supply. From global and European challenges in maintaining sustainable water delivery, to examples of supply and network resilience in the U.K.- including the Strategic Resource Options programmes, and best practice in water reuse and recycling in other parts of the world, the opinion piece offers a compelling view of the need to invest in water infrastructure and make the best of existing resources. Dive into the new Water Allocation Plan for Western Davenport 🌊 The Western Davenport Water Allocation Plan 2024-2027 is available to view online. The plan sets sustainable water use limits, protecting ecological functions with an estimated yield of 67,700 ML/year from the Central Plains’ vast groundwater resources. The region has vast groundwater resources with the largest and most productive being the Central Plains, which holds an estimated 138 million mega litres. This plan has reduced the allowed water take and the plan term has also been reduced from ten to three years. 📃 For more information about the plan and the key messages on our website at https://lnkd.in/g_h2m3pE The full article is available at https://lnkd.in/gtQEYUHu #WaterManagement #NTWaterPlans #SustainableWater #EnvironmentalProtection

🌊 Governor Marina del Pilar met with IBWC’s Adriana Reséndez to discuss vital binational agreements (Acts 320, 323, 328) aimed at securing a sustainable water supply for the Cali-Baja region. Emphasizing the importance of water access amidst global water stress, they highlighted key initiatives, including desalination projects, expanded sanitation infrastructure, and water reuse schemes. Baja California's comprehensive State Water Program outlines 58 crucial projects to ensure optimal water supply for coastal communities. 🌍 These efforts align with Act 320's focus on conservation, Act 323's binational contingency plan for water scarcity, and Act 328's commitment to rehabilitate wastewater infrastructure. US Ambassador Ken Salazar and California Governor Gavin Newsom reinforced the importance of these initiatives, with the US pledging significant funds to address cross-border sewage issues. Together, these historic agreements represent a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and resilient water management for border communities. #CaliBaja #WaterSustainability #BinationalEfforts #EnvironmentalProtection -Approved Read more: https://lnkd.in/eYMMkGzZ

Port de la Selva, a Spanish coastal town, experienced a population surge this Summer, straining its water supply. To improve its water quality and supply, the town adopted advanced data analysis tools and a Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) system, recycling wastewater to recharge groundwater aquifers. Recycling wastewater through an SAT can be a viable solution to increase water supply and mitigate seawater intrusion. This European Commission article highlights how data analysis tools and other digital technologies can help coastal communities improve their water quality and water management systems. https://bit.ly/3XWkqya #WaterWiseEU #WaterManagement #Sustainability #Groundwater #Innovation

Aqua Publica Europea is proud to have convened a panel discussion on Water Resilience Strategies as part of the 7th Meeting of the European Commission’s Ad-hoc Task Group on Water Scarcity and Droughts, held on 2-3 October. The panel brought together four speakers, each representing local realities as diverse as Athens, Catalunya, Malta, and Flanders, who shared their experiences and challenges in enhancing #waterresilience. The engaging discussion, moderated by our Executive Director, covered a variety of topics, including: ➡ Louise Vanysacker, Manager R&D at De Watergroep (Belgium), discussed water availability challenges in Flanders and presented the Flemish strategy for water security, highlighting a range of actions ranging from interconnections to innovative projects on aquifer recharge and reuse. ➡ Jordi Molist Gazapo, Director of Water Supply at the Catalan Water Agency (Spain), outlined the agency’s response to a multi-year drought, including water expansion through potable water reuse, desalination, efficiency measures, and restrictions based on drought severity. ➡ Giorgos (George) Sachinis, Director of Strategy and Innovation at EYDAP (Greece), shared their comprehensive master plan for the Attica region, focusing on strategies and challenges such as the need for adequate water pricing to drive efficiency and closing the financing gap. ➡ Manuel Sapiano, CEO of Malta’s Energy and Water Agency (EWA), presented their strategy centred on two axes: demand management across all water uses and supply diversification. He emphasised the role of non-conventional water resources, particularly water reuse, in meeting long-term water demand. We extend our sincere thanks to the speakers for their valuable insights and to the European Commission for their invitation to organise this important discussion! 💧
