Today the UK became the first European company to approve putting cultivated meat in pet food (specifically cultivated chicken cells by Meatly). In our RethinkX report in 2019 we identified the pet food industry as being an ideal market entry point for cultivated meat - for a few reasons. 🐶 Pet food products offer flexibility with ingredients and product forms, challenging to perfect for human consumption. 🐈⬛ Cultivated meat can consist of cells from various animals (🐁 mouse or 🐇 rabbit anyone?), ensuring optimal nutrition and taste for pets. 🍖Utilizing meat considered "waste" redirects profits from the animal meat industry due to the industry's substantial size. 🐕 Globally, the pet food industry is huge, exceeding $150 billion, with US cats and dogs ranking fifth in meat consumption if considered a separate country. Overall, this is a crucial step for the cultivated meat industry, and emphasizes the thesis that this will be an ingredient-led disruption. Congratulations to Meatly on this exciting progress! #CultivatedMeat #PetFoodIndustry #Innovation #PrecisionFermentation #FoodDisruption

Plant protein-based pet foods are not just an environmental or ethical issue - they're actually necessary due supply and demand issues which could hit as early as THIS year (2024) Most pet parents don't know that animal protein supply chains for pet food are getting more and more strained (one of the reasons we we get contamination and intentional pet food adulteration) and at some point it will no longer be viable to feed the world's billion+ pets purely animal based proteins. Hence, why plant-based pet foods are inevitable and, ironically enough, appear to be healthier for our pets! https://lnkd.in/gMwTfCiQ.

Here's an interesting take on cultivated meat and its potential use as a source for pet food, feeding our most beloved creatures that share space with us. In this spot from Bristol Live, a company called Omni, a pet food company specializing in novel protein solutions, announced a new program seeking cat owners to participate in a taste-testing trial for their latest product, Omni Feast, Chicken Revolution. Their product represents the world's first complete cat food formulated with lab-grown chicken. Omni Feast aims to address growing concerns about sustainability and animal welfare in the pet food industry, while offering a nutritious alternative to traditional meat-based options. The pet food industry is a major contributor to global meat consumption, raising concerns about environmental impact and animal welfare practices. Omni Feast seeks to revolutionize the industry by providing a solution that is both delicious and ethically sourced for cats. The program seeks dedicated cat owners to participate in a comprehensive taste-testing trial. Selected participants will be compensated for their contributions, with a potential monthly stipend of up to £5,000. The program will involve close observation of a cat's interaction with the new food. This includes monitoring feeding habits, energy levels, behavior, and overall health. Thanks Pet Food Industry for shedding light on our industry! Pet owners are willing to give insect-based pet food a try for their fur-babies as long as they don’t see the insects themselves. That’s easy - we don’t see the common ingredients such as chicken/beef liver/fish/corn/SBM or the exotics such as rabbit/kangaroo as a whole itself either, not in dry kibbles, nor treats, nor wet food formats. Most times, we can’t even tell what’s in it! It’s important to make better choices for our pets - simply because we don’t know what’s in these pet foods. If you’re a pet food company dedicated to producing better quality food with healthy, sustainable insect ingredients, reach out to us at pets@protenga.com - we’re pet owners too and care about what we feed our babies. We’d be happy to help you in your journey! #Protenga #InsectPetFood #Insectprotein
