The independent review of the UK Farm Assurance System is a rare opportunity for farmers to express their opinions about farm assurance ,to a body which will exert influence over the shape of relationships between farmers, whose products we all need, and the processors and retailer who make food available to us. Over many years, governments have delegated responsibility for supervising many aspects of food production to the private sector. For what it is worth, my opinion is that the supervision of the environment, animal welfare and safety in food production should remain government's responsibility. Farmers' confidence in the administration of UK Farm Assurance is low, with little understanding of the processes and responsibilities of the parties involved. Take this chance to express your opinions if you are a farmer/producer, and encourage your farmer friends and clients to do so, if you work in and around the industry.

Steve Reed, Secretary of State for EFRA in front of 500 CLA members this morning for a robust defence of the budget and changes to APR and BPR. Takeaways? 1. He showed up and did what he is paid to do: defend Government policy. He didn’t appear uncomfortable, however, accepting collective responsibility for changes to APR and BPR. 2. A speech announcing (or rehearsing) lots of Government initiatives to engineer environmentally and financially sustainable farming for the next 25 years. The state as the solution - which may not have resonated with a room full of people running family businesses. 3. Adamant that Government had the best data to justify its claims as to only 500 farms affected by the changes.  Much work needs to be done by the CLA, NFU and others there. 4. He underplayed his “best point”: that there hasn’t always been relief from IHT for agricultural property. Farmers have only had the benefit (on his speechwriter’s understanding) since 1992. He manifested his empathy with rural communities and promised to continue the conversation with the CLA. So, no real progress.
