We are delighted Nature Returns could join us as sponsor for the Nature Finance UK Conference 2024. Led by Natural England, Nature Returns is a partnership with the Environment Agency, Forestry Commission and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew who are working together to discover and implement natural, sustainable solutions to climate change and nature loss at landscape scale. Working with local partners, Nature Returns is developing strategic funding plans to leverage private investment, gaining a first-hand understanding of how public and private funding can work together in practice at landscape scale. Fires are a critical disturbance event in the adaptive cycle of savanna ecosystems, maintaining healthy ecosystem functioning and foresting high biological diversity. However, since European colonization, fire suppression and prevention operations have dominated in land, forestry, and conservation management, based on the understanding that savannas are degraded forests and have destructive impacts on the ecosystem. This has resulted in widespread ecological degradation, biodiversity loss, and increasing greenhouse gas emissions. 🔥🌱 Join us on July 2nd, when our speaker Abigail Croker, a researcher at the Centre for Environmental Policy, Imperial College London, explores alternative fire management strategies across African semi-arid and mesic savannas, particularly protected area landscapes. Aiming to include participants from different time zones, we will offer two sessions of the Restoration Community Talk: ⭐️ Register here for the session at 9 am CEST: https://lnkd.in/dFe2G5Xr ⭐️ Register here for the session at 5 pm CEST: https://lnkd.in/d8GHrBx7 If you can’t attend yourself, feel free to forward these links to any restoration- and conservation-related contact that might be interested. We look forward to welcoming you for lively discussions! 🙌🏾 #restoration #conservation #community #ecosystem

I read a lot of Annual Reports and few come close to how engaging, informative, and down right inspiring this one is. Ok, as an American Forests Board Member, I might be a bit bias. But, their Resilient Forests and Tree Equity programs are doing unparalleled work as they expand into new locations (over 300 cities and 17,500 acres restored) forming dynamic partnerships that will allow them to create a greater impact locally and nationwide. Here's to climate smart recreation in our cities and climate smart forestry across the nation. #ForestForward #TreeEquity #ClimateSmart

Big blocks of forestry benefit big companies. Waterside woodlands benefit local land managers, and make best use of land that can be difficult to cultivate or unhealthy for stock.
The planting of Riparian Woodland can do much to improve the health and condition of our streams and rivers, including adapting to climate change and boosting biodiversity. 🌳 Forest Research has published a new UK Forestry Standard Practice Guide on how to create and manage Riparian Woodland for water benefits. Head of Physical Environmental Sciences, Tom Nisbet, talks about the significance of the new guidance, which will be of particular interest to those seeking to improve our freshwaters, including woodland owners, managers and planners. 🔗 https://ow.ly/RmPC50SMX6s

Yesterday constituted the final stage of the fruitful project that began in spring 2023 to analyze and support municipal climate planning in the Region of Southern Denmark. The project produced a preliminary report last year. It will soon conclude with the publication of the full report that will have a particular focus on climate planning and action in Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use. A particular thank you to Nicola Tollin and Clarissa A. from the UNESCO Chair on Urban Resilience (SDU_Resilience), as well as to our collaborators Martin Lehmann and Anna Deeg from Aalborg University and Thomas Skou Grindsted from Roskilde University. We also thank vita Jokumsen, Boris Schønfeldt, Thomas Dyhr Vestergaard, and Rasmus Rønde Møller for the coordination of this collaboration and their outstanding work in the climate front for the Region Syddanmark. #ClimateAction #ClimatePlanning #AFOLU

Friday Facts 💡 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have a profound connection to our forests, valuing them for cultural, social, and economic reasons. In 2016, 70 million hectares of forest – over half of Australia’s forests – were part of the Indigenous estate, with recognised ownership, management, or special rights of access and use. 🌳 These forests also protect cultural heritage, with over 126,000 registered Indigenous heritage sites across the landscape. In 2021, the forest and wood products industries provided direct employment to 1,478 Indigenous people, highlighting the importance of Indigenous participation in sustainable forest management.
