SAFETY CULTURE: Shared values, beliefs, attitude and behaviors related to safety within an organization. It represents the long term deeply embedded aspects of how safety is prioritized and managed across the company. The Chernobyl Disaster (1986) highlighted the importance of safety culture and the effect of managerial and human factors on safety performance. It takes time to develop safety culture and it can remain unchanged for a long period of time. SAFETY CLIMATE: Perception and attitude of employees about safety at a specific moment in time. It reflects how safety is being managed at a particular time and can fluctuate based on recent events or management changes. It is snapshot of perception at particular moment of time, however it can change quickly. Both are closely related and crucial for improving workplace safety. While safety culture drives sustained safety practices, safety climate offers an immediate information of how well safety is being managed at a given moment.

An illusions of Progress for your organizational Safety culture: Some companies have a tendency to remove "bad" employees who made an error during their work that resulted in incident. Removing them immediately from organization may be undermining your efforts to achieve a sustainable safety culture. Potential to make same error still remains in your organization unless you address underlaying issues.

SAFETY: Not just a word, but a mindset! Safety is crucial because it protects us from physical, emotional, or financial harm. In our daily lives, safety measures ensure that we can go about our activities without fear of injury or danger. This preserves our well-being and lets us confidently focus on our goals and responsibilities. Situational awareness also falls under safety, allowing us to anticipate and react before something deadly or hazardous occurs. Knowing your surroundings can go a long way in preventing the "unexpected." Safety protocols prevent workplace accidents, ensuring employees can work in a secure environment and increasing productivity and morale. On a broader scale, safety is the foundation of stable communities and societies, fostering trust and cooperation among individuals. By prioritizing safety, we create environments where people can thrive and reach their full potential. Take the time to think through your task instead of throwing caution to the wind. BECAUSE getting EVERYONE home to their loved ones is job one!

Exploring Safety Culture (Part 2) Understanding safety culture is equally crucial for a healthy and thriving workplace. A poor safety culture is characterized by various factors, including noncompliance with health and safety legislation, failure to follow safety rules and procedures, and an overall lack of commitment to safety. Signs of a poor safety culture include lack of leadership buy-in, poor communication, underreporting of incidents, and high accident rates. Creating a positive safety culture involves: Encouragement and Participation: Actively involving employees in safety programs. Willingness to Report: Creating an environment where employees feel comfortable reporting safety concerns without fear of retaliation. Education and Access: Providing education on safety matters and ensuring easy access to relevant information. Freedom from Retaliation: Guaranteeing that employees won't face consequences for reporting safety issues. Empowerment: Empowering employees to halt unsafe tasks, prioritizing safety over other considerations. The goal of safety culture is to protect everyone from hazards, and it starts with shared standards and practices implemented throughout the organization. Safety culture is often interchangeably referred to as "safety climate." In summary, fostering cultural safety and a positive safety culture are integral components of a thriving workplace, promoting respect, understanding, and the well-being of all individuals involved.
