World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day - How to turn the spotlight on NTDs Nearly two billion people are affected by at least one of the conditions known collectively as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), from yaws and noma to fatal snakebite. Today, on World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day, take a look at a collection of 10 features that highlight huge successes against some of these illnesses — and why others have evaded efforts to move them into the spotlight. In the latest feature, we look at human African trypanosomiasis, commonly known as sleeping sickness. Efforts to control the population of the tsetse fly, which transmit the parasites that cause the diseases, and the development of more-effective therapies have brought us to the brink of eliminating the once-widespread disease. #WorlNeglectedTropicalDiseasesDay #NTDs https://lnkd.in/dUxBfDcS

On World NTDs Day we shine a light on the millions of people affected by Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) - diseases that often receive little attention despite their significant impact on health, especially in vulnerable populations. NTDs disproportionately affect the world's poorest communities, often in rural and underserved regions. We specialize in tropical and parasitic diseases and offer a broad range of easy-to-use, cost-effective tests to increase accessibility to NTDs screening, even in resource-limited settings. The day is marked every year to bring much needed attention to neglected tropical diseases, such as lymphatic filariasis and mycetoma NTDs are often both a cause and consequence of poverty. There are an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide that suffer from an NTD. So-called neglected tropical diseases are a plague in many countries of the global south. Some of these diseases are now appearing in industrialised countries too, with consequences for research, as Max Klein explains. He works for the German civil-society organisation BUKO Pharma-Kampagne. We recommend reading his D+C contribution to anyone who wants to know why neglected tropical diseases are important and should not be neglected at all: https://lnkd.in/gZXVEa2c #health #SDG3 #globalhealth #development
