🚤 Understanding the Types of Fiberglass Used in Boat Hulls 🚤 Fiberglass is a popular material in boat construction due to its strength, durability, and versatility. Here are some common types of fiberglass used in boat hulls: E-Glass: The most widely used type, known for its excellent strength and affordability. It's ideal for general boat construction. S-Glass: Offers higher tensile strength and impact resistance compared to E-Glass, making it suitable for high-performance and racing boats. C-Glass: Known for its chemical resistance, it's often used in boats that operate in harsh chemical environments. Carbon Fiber: Although not technically fiberglass, it's worth mentioning for its superior strength-to-weight ratio, used in high-performance and luxury yachts. Each type of fiberglass has unique properties that make it suitable for different applications in boat building. Choosing the right type ensures optimal performance and longevity of the vessel. #BoatBuilding #Fiberglass #MarineEngineering #YachtDesign #Innovation

This is Seabuddy’s favorite Lyman model for its balance of easy trailering, roomy cockpit, and plenty of power. Go smaller, to the 16 1/2-foot outboard Lyman and one is limited to a 60 horsepower engine. The next size up in the Lyman outboard powered line-up was the 18’ where most would choose twin 35-40 horsepower engines, which adds complication in systems, controls, and over-the-road towing weight. This boat seems to have gloss rather than a semi-gloss white painted hull sides on its clinker built outboard. The natural wood stains and varnishes look spot on. Many Lyman owners prefer the gloss finish, so she should be easy to sell if one wanted to so in the future. Here the seats, deck and other parts show, to me, the correct, or “as built”, finishes. Lyman mahogany filler stain with varnish over would be the proper choice. Lyman boats was also known for its use of ribbon striped (sometimes called tiger striped) mahogany veneered marine-grade plywood. That material grade is more expensive, but to seabuddy it is worth it. What is “clinker built”? It is the lapstrake construction style of planking. Each plank edge overlaps the other and they are clinched nailed to the ribs (plus, screwed to the frames) such that an edge is shown at each plank for its full length along the hull side that helps soften the ride. Also, these are flexible boats that can twist over the waves somewhat to give a better ride than most classic boat persons would expect. Get a ride in a Lyman to experience this for yourself. Lyman Boats had their production peak in 1955, with over 5,000 boats produced in sizes from 13’ to 20’ in length. These 1950–1960-year Lyman boats were well built, light, long lasting wooden boats.

Chris-Craft Sea Skiff boats were renowned for their clinker-built, or lapstrake planking, construction with a round-chine bottom design. This approach was Chris-Craft's strategic response to capture market share from Lyman Boat Works, the dominant leader in lapstrake boats. Wikipedia highlights the distinct characteristics of clinker-built construction: "Clinker-built (also known as lapstrake) is a method of boat building where the edges of hull planks overlap each other… A contrasting method, where plank edges are butted smoothly seam to seam, is known as carvel construction.” Chris-Craft’s innovative adaptation of the clinker-built technique introduced a groundbreaking adhesive called Thiokol, later rebranded as "Chris-Craft Sealer." This adhesive, originally developed during World War II, significantly enhanced the hull's strength—reportedly making it four times stronger than traditional clinker-built designs. To support this new production method, Chris-Craft opened a massive 339,963-square-foot lapstrake boat manufacturing plant in Salisbury, Maryland, in 1954. Though this plant became the hub for their lapstrake boats, a small number were also produced in Algonac. The Salisbury facility remained operational until its closure in 1969.

Aluminum yacht construction stands out with its advantages such as lightness, durability, and corrosion resistance. The machinability of aluminum allows for complex and hydrodynamic hull designs. Additionally, its lightweight structure enhances performance by reducing fuel consumption. Welded joints are commonly used in aluminum construction, and thermal treatment and inspection processes are applied to ensure structural safety. To prolong its lifespan against seawater, aluminum hulls are typically protected with anodes. Aluminum is an ideal material, especially for high-performance motor yachts and luxury yachts.

⛵ As 2024 is coming to an end, 🚢 we're revisiting the moments that captured the most attention this year ⚓ That is the post that you liked the most in November and it's stats👇 🔺 Likes: 778 🔺 Comments: 17 🔺 Reshares: 59 📢 MC Classics 📢 How to laminate a huge yacht? 🛳️ Look at its size!!! 😮💨 Let's talk about the #composites manufacturing process that is by far, the best suited for time-lapses! 📹 We are talking, of course, about resin #infusion, a fascinating process that is widely spread in the industry! 👀 Resin infusion is a sophisticated technique for manufacturing high-performance, void-free composites even on large or complicated molds. In this manufacturing process, reinforcement is laid into the mold ‘‘dry’’, i.e. without any resin, and then enclosed in a specially configured stack of bagging materials (such as peel-ply, infusion mesh, and bagging film) before being subjected to vacuum pressure using a vacuum pump 🧐 Once all the air has been removed from the bag and the reinforcement has been fully compressed under this pressure, liquid resin (mixed with hardener) is introduced to the reinforcement through a pipe which then infuses through the reinforcement under the vacuum pressure. Once the resin has fully infused through the reinforcement, the supply of resin is cut off and the resin is left to cure, still under vacuum pressure. 😎 This video shows the hull of Sasga Yachts SL' Menorquin 55 being manufactured at Barracuda Yacht Design! 😍

This video is amazing, not only because of its main content but also because of the activities performed on the left side, i.e. fabrication of the mould (for the top part of the yacht), which is more complicated and sensitive than the manufacturing process of the product itself. Usually, companies do not display such processes as moulds are usually considered as trade-secrets for composite manufacturers. P.S. Similar process is used for manufacturing of wind power plant blades.
Southern Wind has been perfecting the art of building carbon composite yachts since 2000, pioneering advanced lamination techniques that set us apart. Our innovative "3-shot infusion process" ensures that every yacht we build is exceptionally rigid, reliable and light. This process is repeated three times: on both sides of the hull and on the bottom of the hull, ensuring an optimum ratio of resin to fibre throughout the hull. We start by laminating the outer skin to the mould. Once the outer laminate has cured, we carefully place foam core sheets, making sure there are no gaps. These sheets are then bonded together with a special epoxy adhesive called 'Core Bond'. This step is critical to maintaining the integrity of the structure. Once the Core Bond has cured, we prepare the foam surface and laminate the inner skin onto the foam. This final layer locks everything in place, resulting in perfectly aligned fibres and a well-positioned core. The result? A yacht that's incredibly light yet remarkably strong, the perfect balance of performance and durability. Enjoy the process as seen in the lamination of our latest creation, the SW100X, now under construction. Find out more about the project: https://lnkd.in/dnrfW9Vn
