The BOKA Vanguard, formerly known as Dockwise Vanguard, is a semi-submersible heavy transport vessel (SSHTV) owned by Boskalis, a Dutch maritime services company. Constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea, the vessel was delivered in 2013 and is recognized as the largest of its kind, capable of transporting cargoes up to 110,000 tonnes. Measuring 275 meters in length and 70 meters in width, the BOKA Vanguard features a unique bowless design, allowing it to accommodate overhanging cargo both fore and aft. This innovative configuration enables the transport of massive offshore oil and gas facilities, including Floating Production Storage and Offloading units (FPSOs), semi-submersible rigs, and tension-leg platforms. The vessel's deck can be submerged below water level by ballasting, facilitating the float-on and float-off loading and unloading of heavy structures. Once the cargo is positioned, the ballast tanks are de-ballasted to raise the deck above the water surface, securing the load for transport. Equipped with a propulsion system comprising two Wärtsilä 6L38 and two Wärtsilä 12V38 engines, the BOKA Vanguard achieves a service speed of 14 knots. Its dynamic positioning capabilities and advanced motion monitoring systems ensure precise maneuverability and stability during complex offshore operations. Since its commissioning, the BOKA Vanguard has been instrumental in executing some of the heaviest and most challenging transports in the offshore industry. Notably, it was contracted to transport the Goliat FPSO to northern Norway and the Aasta Hansteen spar platform to the Norwegian Sea. As of December 2024, the BOKA Vanguard continues to serve as a critical asset in the global heavy marine transport sector, enabling the relocation of oversized structures that are beyond the capacity of conventional vessels. Its design and operational success have set new standards in the maritime heavy lift industry.

UWILD activities at FPSO What is Underwater Inspection in Lieu of Dry-Docking (UWILD)? UWILD also known as Underwater Inspection in Lieu of Dry-Docking is an arguably safer and more efficient alternative to the more conventional dry-docking method of marine vessel inspection. UWILD inspections entail inspecting the submerged part of the vessel/FPSO What are submerged part of FPSO need to inspect.? Hull Similarly to any offshore vessel, the hull refers to the exterior of a FPSO. While a portion of the hull will always remain above surface, the entire underside and lower sections of the sides will consistently be below the water level. Mooring System The mooring system will generally consist of a variety of anchors, lines, and connectors. These serve the purpose of holding the FPSO’s station at sea in order to safely and effectively produce and store oil/gas. Risers Risers refer to pipelines that connect the FPSO to subsea equipment. ‘Flexible risers’ are the multipurpose pipelines that connect the vessel to the production structures (such as Plets and Plems) or the rigid pipelines at sea bottom level. They are constructed of flexible materials which allow for the FPSO to move without damaging or disconnecting the risers. As identified in the 2013 paper ‘Offshore Dry-Docking of FPSOs: A Response to Industry Needs’, FPSOs are generally designed for continuous usage over 25 years, however reality has shown that although designed to strict criteria, structural and hull maintenance shortcomings have become apparent after prolonged periods, subsequently prompting remedial actions or extensive offshore maintenance campaigns. Traditional inspection methods of drydocking FPSOs not only come at extensive costs, but pull the vessel out of service during the inspection. Methods of offshore drydocking are being developed, and while these would allow for the FPSO to remain connected to a drill or production site, the cost and scheduling complications of recruiting a heavy transport vessel are substantial. source https://lnkd.in/gmPCXGbk
