Psychologist Dr. Wayne Dyer famously said, “If you are what you do when you don’t you aren’t”. A clever choice of words and a serious issue for some who lose their job or can longer perform it. I have a helped clients in their 50s that after 20 years with a company were “right sized”; corporate speak for a RIF (no one that’s out of a job feels it’s right). These folks often feel depressed, question themselves, and worry about their financial future. But most end up realizing it was a blessing in disguise. After the shock wears off, we are able to develop an actionable career transition plan that lands them in a role and organization that will provide the psychic salary they never had. Making new work friends can take some time but it’s a great opportunity to stretch and grow. The best advice is to embrace it as an adventure and a new chapter in your life. Most of our parents are doing it wrong. Before you jump to conclusions, hear me out. Growing up, many of us were taught that success meant sticking to a stable, traditional career path. Our parents, well-intentioned as they were, had job security and long-term stability. But here’s the thing: their advice might be a bit outdated for today’s fast-paced, ever-evolving job market. The landscape has changed dramatically, and sticking to an old-school approach might actually be holding us back. It’s not about disregarding their wisdom but recognizing that the world of work has transformed, and so should our strategies. Here’s what we should learn from this shift: 👉 The career path of today isn’t always a straight line. Be open to unexpected opportunities and don’t be afraid to pivot when necessary. 👉 Your job title isn’t the end-all. Focus on developing skills that are versatile and in demand across different fields. 👉 A strong network can often open doors that a traditional resume might not. Build meaningful relationships and seek out mentors who can offer guidance. 👉 The hustle culture glorified by traditional paths isn’t worth it. The job market is tough right now. According to Wendy (Henriques) Randall who has been in HR for 25 years and has seen her share of challenging markets; she says this is the most difficult one yet. It’s even tougher than the 2007-2009 recession and the early 2000s tech bust. What was once a candidate-driven market has flipped, with employers now holding the advantage. When recruiters are plentiful, it’s a sign that companies aren’t hiring like they once did. When I saw Wendy's post, I felt compelled to reply and share one of the most challenging periods in my life. I was hoping to encourage anyone in a similar position to hang in there. This is real. People are struggling. So, I decided to share my story again in case someone in my network needs a bit of encouragement today. My Story: Over 32 years ago, my career came to an abrupt halt, and there were no jobs in my field. Despite 12 years of experience, I found myself starting over. To make things even harder, I had just gone through a divorce, and two years earlier, my wife and I had lost our first child. It felt like my world was crumbling. But I didn’t give up. I chose resilience, determination, and adaptability. Pivoting from chemical engineering to financial planning wasn’t easy, but my skills in problem-solving and handling complexity helped me make the leap. My story proves that your expertise is more transferable than you think, and there’s always a way forward. On this World Mental Health Day, Wendy reminds us to reach out to our former teammates or colleagues who may be struggling. A smile, a chat, or a quick message could make a world of difference. Change in employment status can be extremely stressful. Whether your career is affected by a downsizing, a job change or a life change, it can be a time of self-doubt and even the unwelcome presence of the imposter syndrome. That is completely normal. Change happens and many times employment changes are beyond one’s control. It is a good time to evaluate what you really want to do, what brings you joy, what aligns with your values and what success really means to you. Corporate downsizing is not your fault. It has nothing to do with you as a professional. Keep in mind your talents, successes, accomplishments and experiences. When you leave a job, those things come with you. You own that professional identification, not the company you work for. Other companies will be happy and honored to have you in their organization.
