What could possibly be wrong with your data center? Well, during our time testing & commissioning more than 400 data centers worldwide, we have found tens of thousands of problems, big and small, for our clients. The problems come from all dimensions, including design, construction, equipment, and operations. It would cost the operations team nightmares if these problems are not found in advance since many of the problems are DIFFICULT and EXPENSIVE to fix once the data center is put into operations. As examples, here are some real-world problems our team has found in the past, which are only the tip of the iceberg: Problem 1: Precision air conditioner power distribution issue (design problem) A modular server room used N+1 precision air conditioners for cooling, and in the precision air conditioner power distribution route, multiple precision air conditioners shared a dual power automatic transfer switch (ATS), and the ATS was not set up with a maintenance bypass. If the ATS switch fails and needs to be repaired, it will affect the normal operation of multiple precision air conditioners, resulting in abnormal cooling for the entire room. Problem 2: Cable and zero sequence current transformer installation issue (construction problem) A metal clad cable was grounded after passing through the zero sequence current transformer. This incorrect wiring might lead to inaccurate measurement of zero sequence current. When the system is in normal operation, it could be misjudged that a ground fault occurs, which may cause the protective device to operate incorrectly, resulting in unnecessary power outages. Problem 3: Condensation after UPS shutdown (operations problem) During the rainy season, after a daytime test, the construction workers disconnected and shut down the UPS and precision air conditioners in the power distribution room without informing the data center owner and our testing team. The next morning, when the UPS was turned on, there was a short-circuit "fried" situation. After investigation, the testing team confirmed that after the UPS was shut down, due to the influence of weather and difference in temperature, the internal copper rows became dewy, which led to a short circuit. #datacenter #testing #commissioning

Here are the main steps to calculate total power in a data center: 1. Estimate IT Load Calculate the total power consumed by servers, storage, and networking equipment. Consider server density and energy consumption per rack. 2. Include Cooling Systems Power Account for the power required to operate chillers, CRAC units, air handling units, and other HVAC systems. Thermal storage tanks and liquid cooling systems may reduce cooling power requirements. 3. Add Backup Power Systems Factor in the power needed for Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), battery rooms, and generators. Ensure redundancy to meet Tier certification levels. 4. Consider Power Distribution Calculate power loss in Power Distribution Units (PDUs) and cabling. Ensure distribution systems are designed to handle the total load with minimal losses. 5. Add Miscellaneous Loads Include power for security systems, lighting, fire suppression, and network operations centers (NOCs). 6. Total Power Demand Sum all the power requirements and add a buffer for future growth or unexpected demand surges. Factor in Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE): Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) = Total Facility Power ÷ IT Equipment Power. PUE helps account for additional power needed for cooling, lighting, and other systems. Aim for a PUE below 1.5.
