A skilled engineer is an asset to the company, no matter the salary, while a mediocre engineer is a liability, even if they save on salary costs. I’m always surprised by companies that hire just anyone simply because they come cheap. A skilled engineer saves you money by getting the job done right the first time, avoiding rework and issues. They also save on materials and orders by knowing exactly what to request, achieving the best possible savings on resources. A skilled engineer ensures optimal productivity by effectively managing the workforce. They create administrative advantages by intelligently handling relationships with all project stakeholders. Additionally, they enhance your reputation, adding value and prestige to your company’s name. Companies grow because they have talented and competent staff. Any company that doesn’t prioritize carefully selecting its people is bound to fail. As a project manager, you must fight to ensure your team is skilled and exceptional. Choose your team with care. A weak engineer can cost you the salary difference between them and a skilled engineer over two years with just one mistake. Engineering remains a science, and those with greater knowledge will always hold better positions. A knowledgeable engineer is a significant asset. If you're a skilled engineer working hard on yourself and know you're truly exceptional, you must value yourself. Is it: 🌟 Technical Expertise: A good engineer possesses deep knowledge in their field and continuously improves by keeping up with new technologies and methodologies. 🌟 Creativity and Innovation: The ability to develop original ideas and find new solutions to complex problems is essential. 🌟 Analytical Thinking: Breaking down problems into smaller parts and approaching their resolution systematically helps to arrive at the best solutions. 🌟 Communication Skills: Effective communication with the team, clients, and other stakeholders ensures clear conveyance of ideas and solutions. 🌟 Teamwork: Working in multidisciplinary teams, where different perspectives and contributions are valued, is crucial for the success of any project. 🌟 Ethics and Professionalism: Maintaining high standards of integrity and responsibility in all aspects of work builds trust and respect. 🌟 Practical Experience: Applying theoretical knowledge in real situations and adapting approaches based on feedback and practical experience is invaluable. 🌟 Attention to Detail: Accuracy and precision in work ensure quality results. 🌟 Adaptability: Flexibility and readiness to adapt to changes and new challenges in a dynamic environment are essential. 🌟 Project Management: Efficient planning, organizing, and managing resources to complete projects on time and within budget.   All of these points are true, and we all strive towards them. Here are my thoughts on what makes a successful Project Engineer: >>>The ability to maintain focus>>> 1. You need a clear understanding of what your project milestones and targets are and what risk do you run if you do not meet those targets compared to time and resources. 2. Meetings, emails and calls are extremely critical as they build a better understanding of the project outcomes. 3. You need to be target driven. It’s a lucrative process. >>>Strong Communication>>> 1. You need to be bold not arrogant, it will help a lot to be self aware in situations. 2. Being able to have a consultative approach in project engineering is a hot skill in the industry, so sharpen your technical skills. 3. Be able to identify risk compared to time (eg. lead time) and communicate it with your team. >>>Creativity>>> 1. In project a environment you need to be creative because things don’t always go according to plan, so you need a Plan B and C. 2. Always be hungry to learn because the creative idea can develop into better technical solutions. 3. Experience compliments and solidifies the technical, administrative and sales skills of a talented project engineer. >>>The Best Part>>> You get to do what you are passionate about the most which is designing an engineered solution and seeing your creative approach be supported by a design process come to real life and actually solving a real life problem!! #projectengineer #mechanicaldesign #mechanicalengineering #projectmanagement

After spending 7-8 years in the industrial industry as a service engineer, a candidate aspiring to a managerial role should ideally possess a diverse set of skills. Here are some key skills that would be valuable for a managerial position: 1. **Leadership:** Ability to lead and motivate teams, delegate tasks effectively, and provide guidance and support to team members. 2. **Communication:** Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with team members, clients, and other stakeholders. 3. **Problem-solving:** Ability to identify and analyze complex problems, develop innovative solutions, and make sound decisions. 4. **Technical expertise:** In-depth knowledge and expertise in the industrial sector, including familiarity with various technologies, equipment, and processes. 5. **Customer focus:** A strong customer orientation, with the ability to understand and meet customer needs and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction. 6. **Project management:** Experience in managing projects, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and coordinating resources to ensure successful project outcomes. 7. **Strategic thinking:** Ability to think strategically and develop long-term plans and objectives to achieve organizational goals. 8. **Teamwork:** Ability to work collaboratively with others, both within the team and across different departments, to achieve common goals. 9. **Adaptability:** Willingness to adapt to changing circumstances and environments, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic industry. 10. **Business acumen:** Understanding of business principles and practices, including financial management, budgeting, and cost control. Well, I'm feel like a rant today. Once again I've stumbled accross a job advertisement that requires a senior project engineer (me) to "project manage". That's the job of, guess what, a project manager. A project engineer is someone who makes sure that there is full coordination on a project (EPC). Who is also a troubleshooter that looks at problems and initiate, perform, or instruct corrective measures to correct errors or issues (with coordination). It's a function that looks at, and deals with, the detail of project issues to ensure successful project delivery. However, to me it seem like employers now want project engineers to be "project managers" because they're in a lower "income bracket". These employers don't seem to understand that project engineering is just as specialised as any other engineering discipline, yet can only be achieved through proper Systems Engineering education and plenty of experience. Or am I reading this wrong? Comments are welcome and encouraged! That's how we learn.

Is there a perfect career path for a Project Planning Engineer? Young Engineer: According to me the best career path for a Planning Engineer is this. a) When you are young, work with professionals, expand your network within the industry you are working; and then. b) Establish your own business in this industry, so you don't have to work for someone. That's the safest way establishing your own company, since you are not starting from scratch. What is your view on this? Me : I appreciate your thought process, however I believe there is no best or safest career path out there. Whatever path you choose, has challenges, setbacks and failures. At a particular point of time, we may think that this or that is the best approach, As we grow and gain experience in the industry, we might get new ideas and the old ones may look irrelevant, and that is perfectly ok. My suggestion is that when you are working in the industry for whatever time, you need to be hungry and curious, do not set rules for spending particular years in a profile. You may feel you are ready in 5 years, then go for the business, if you face setbacks, go back to the job, learn and come back again and try. Young Engineer : You're absolutely right, there's no perfect way. It could be only the one where I feel passionate about. Can you give an example of a business opportunity that I explore to start my business with the experience of a project planning engineer? Me : I often observe a gap between Project Management processes and Contracting &  Legal procedures, you may explore this area if you like.
