To all those who have become members of the #OpenToWork group, please remain hopeful and steadfast in your search. One year ago today, I started my work day like any other day. We had a team meeting as we did every other week. During the meeting, I received a notification for a meeting with my leader’s leader whom I had never met with. I immediately felt anxiety and despair. I knew what was coming. During this very short call, I was laid off by someone who didn’t know me. My role, my talents, I was no longer relevant to the company, despite that I was just 51 days from my 25th anniversary with the company. While felling all of these emotions, I had to read, understand, and sign the severance agreement or risk not getting continuous compensation. Around 400 of us were let go last year, many with tenure even longer than mine. So many emotions swirled around me the rest of that day and the days that followed. In order to have some sense of community and purpose, I started a group on Slack where a small number of us shared emotions, challenges, and successes with each other. This group helped me to refocus on moving on and finding my next role. I was fortunate enough to quickly find and start my new role within three months, through patience, perseverance, persistence, and good timing. There are amazing opportunities out there! Surrounding myself with a great group of people in the same circumstance also helped. Having people who lift you up and remind you of your value is paramount. #JobSearch

See the difference when #opentowork is displayed in purple as opposed to its original green? It says the same thing and yet somehow it changes how you feel about it. How do you think it makes recruiters and hiring managers feel? And do these feelings affect judgement? I would argue most certainly, yes. In my previous post, I put up the notion that #opentowork was akin to shooting yourself in the foot. People will hear the gunshot (greater awareness) but also notice your bleeding foot ( stigma of being unemployed). I also argue that the default colour choice presented by LinkedIn to be deliberate, signaling the power difference between hirer ( purple = wisdom/affluence) and job seeker ( green = freshness/novice). Some commented the frames makes no difference. Hiring managers felt they could be objective and overcome their biases. Job seekers felt they received more enquiries because of it. Others question my reasons for throwing shade in an era of transparency and empathy. I do not dispute any of these opinions or experiences. My point being these frames, even the colour of the frames influences* perceptions for better or for worse. Although these influences are unobservable to the naked eye, they should not be discounted. So be informed, use these influences to your advantage when you can or at minimum- seek to minimise the drawbacks if you can. I guess that explains why the background of my display picture is a deep warm orange hue; reminding you of warm sunsets and a well deserved orange juice. Because in real life, I am everything but that. If you recently got laid off and want to put the #OpenToWork banner sign on your profile, do these four things first. 1. Optimize your profile for the roles you’re looking for. 2. Start with giving some context and give a snapshot of who you are and what you do. 3. Get specific about what you're looking for next. 4. Include a call to action that encourages your network to engage with your post. Most of the time, the person who can help you is someone you have already met. So, it is worth giving it a shot by sharing your life updates with your connections on LinkedIn. If you found value in this advice, share this with your network.

I provide 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐬 that keep you, your family & your business secure. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭 & 𝐁𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞! #𝐒𝐀𝐁𝐒
Does displaying the green #OpenToWork banner make you look desperate? Does posting a profile on a dating website scream you’re lonely & have to be in a relationship❓ Does posting a classified ad selling an item mean you don’t have any money & you’re now selling all of your belongings❓ Does a business posting a “Now Hiring” ad mean they are struggling as a company❓NO❗️It means they’re growing & need hire to offer their product or service to more people. So no, I don’t think the green #OpenToWork banner screams desperation. It’s simply another tool letting companies know you’re looking to bring value to their business & expand your career path. What are your thoughts? “Stating you’re #OpenToWork is as desperate as the employer who’s posting an ad stating they have an open position.” - Credible Security Solutions, Inc.
