For many, it’s a time for personal reflection or simply honoring the day in their own way. In the end, it’s all about what feels meaningful to you. Celebrations should bring happiness, not pressure. Celebrating something on a particular day often brings forth a rush of excitement and festivity, but the challenge lies in maintaining that beyond the designated date. Take birthdays, for example. While they warrant grand gestures and heartfelt wishes on the specific day, their significance can wane in the day-to-day hustle and bustle. This pattern repeats with various holidays, anniversaries, and cultural celebrations. The danger of lowering importance solely to these fixed dates is that the essence of what we celebrate may get lost in the routine of life. It's similar to watering a plant once a year and expecting it to flourish. The true value of these occasions lies not just in the momentary joy they bring but in the enduring meaning they hold in our lives. By infusing daily acknowledgment and appreciation into our routines, we imbue these celebrations with a deeper sense of significance. Whether it's expressing gratitude for loved ones, reflecting on personal milestones, or honoring cultural traditions, integrating these practices into our daily lives nurtures a continual sense of connection and appreciation. Happy Easter or Happy Spring holiday? Workplace and culture. Hard to get it right. Ignore cultural feasts and you seem cold and out of touch. Embrace every ‘day’ and you’ll be accused of being faddish or is that ‘woke’ in modern parlance. Perhaps it’s a question of being true to who you are as a business and the people of your business. There are some moments that define us and our people; birthdays, promotions, weddings, to ignore these demonstrates a hardness of outlook. There are also societal and cultural moments that make us who we are; national days, days of liberation from an invader. For many countries these moments necessarily include religious days; national patron saints and the key religious festivals that have made up society for centuries. Central to this for countries of Christian heritage is Easter, the day of the resurrection of Jesus Christ promising new life and a new way of relating to each other. Unlike many other ‘days’ the content of Easter is worth marking and celebrating in business, especially if your business is people. In my experience non-religious people, many of whom have shared the culture of Christianity at school, at weddings etc. are not offended by the marking and celebration of Easter, but find it a healthy part of the employer appreciation of the cultural matrix that fosters a happy workplace in which we live and hopefully thrive. Yesterday marked my 44th birthday, but today's post isn't about that milestone. It's about something far more impactful. I was fortunate to grow up with an abundance of self-confidence instilled in me from a young age. I was born on May 1st, a national holiday in Russia akin to Labor Day in the US. In my hometown of Raduzhny, my father was a prominent figure, often leading citywide events, including the grand May 1st celebrations. Each year, he would take me along, standing proudly on the tribune as the city paraded by, saluting. As a child, I would ask why the entire city celebrated, to which he would always reply, "They're celebrating your birthday, honey!" And so, we would return home to enjoy a birthday cake. This childhood experience left an indelible mark on me, instilling a deep sense of importance and self-belief. It made me feel special and taught me to believe in myself, even when times were tough. This unwavering confidence has been my anchor through life's challenges, empowering me to pursue my goals fearlessly. So, where I am now is very much due to that “they are celebrating your birthday, honey” from my childhood. Now, as a parent, I strive to impart the same sense of self-assurance to my own children. I want them to feel special, unique, and capable of conquering the world. A simple word of encouragement, a moment of admiration, or a gesture of appreciation can go a long way in nurturing their confidence. Whether it’s your own child or any other kid – never underestimate the power of boosting someone's confidence. While celebrating another birthday with my girl, I am grateful for having adopted a multifaceted approach that has helped myself to get away from a lot of struggles and pain. 1. Self-Acceptance and Compassion Embracing oneself with kindness and understanding is a critical step. This involves recognizing and challenging internalized negative beliefs about aging and self-worth. Self-compassion helps to soften the harsh self-criticism and create a nurturing internal environment. 2. Redefining Beauty and Value: Shifting the narrative around beauty and self-worth can provide immense relief. This includes redefining beauty to encompass a range of attributes beyond physical appearance, such as confidence, kindness, intelligence, and resilience. Valuing oneself for a broader set of qualities can diminish the anxiety associated with aging. 3. Mindfulness and Presence: Practicing mindfulness helps to anchor oneself in the present moment, reducing anxiety about the future or regrets about the past. Mindfulness can enhance appreciation for the current stage of life, fostering a sense of peace and contentment. 4. Building Support Networks: Surrounding oneself with supportive and positive individuals can provide emotional strength and perspective (and yes it is ok if you don't have it). Engaging with communities that celebrate diverse forms of beauty and success can be empowering. 5. Pursuing Passion and Purpose: Engaging in activities and pursuits that resonate deeply can bring a sense of fulfillment and joy that goes beyond superficial measures of worth. Discovering and dedicating oneself to passions and purposes can instill a lasting sense of accomplishment and intrinsic value. My favorite birthday wish is To be the authentic self and be honest and grateful for who you are today:)
