At Pathfinders Ltd, we've been deeply committed to enhancing the well-being of children and young people in out-of-home care (OoHC) by investing in strong partnerships and cultural understanding. Recently, at the Association of Children's Welfare Agencies conference, we presented on the importance of collaboration, trust-building, listening and capacity building with Aboriginal community-controlled OoHC organisations during transition periods. This aligns perfectly with the NSW Government's initiative to transfer case management responsibilities to these agencies, recognising their crucial role in nurturing cultural connections and providing essential support. Our partnership with Armajun Aboriginal Health Services exemplifies this commitment. Armajun is the only Aboriginal organisation offering health care services in the northern New England area in NSW and is a recognised Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO). CEO to CEO, we've built a relationship grounded in respect and shared goals, focusing on cultural continuity and healing for children affected by abuse and neglect. Together, we're overcoming challenges, fostering understanding, and promoting policies that empower Aboriginal communities. Like all successful relationships it has taken time for each party to settle into a rhythm. We have given each other space and time to become comfortable with each other. Challenges such as organisational cultural differences, funding constraints, and power imbalances are acknowledged and the emphasis is on collaborative efforts to address these challenges together and to promote policies that support Aboriginal self-determination and sovereignty. We are dedicated to sharing our expertise, resources, policies, and practices to ensure that every child in care receives the best possible support – regardless of provider - as we believe in the power of collaboration and knowledge sharing to elevate standards in out-of-home care. Our work isn't just about transferring children in care—it's about creating safe, stable environments where every child can thrive. The outcomes we're seeing underscore the power of collaboration and genuine partnership in achieving positive social impact. Thank you to our partners, stakeholders, and dedicated team at Pathfinders for their unwavering commitment to improving the lives of children in OoHC. Let's continue this journey of support, learning, and growth together! #Pathfinders #ChildWelfare #AboriginalCommunity #PartnershipInAction #SocialImpact #CulturalContinuity #ACWA #OOHC #ABSEC #SNAICC

Lots going on in this space at the moment in light of the DRC and NDIS review as well as the interwoven issues within the proposed national carer strategy. Great to see some innovative responses particularly around sustainable housing and bolstering the workforce. Would still love to see greater opportunities for flexibility from our governments including the incorporation of location based responses, taking into account the complexities encountered within population sub-cohorts. A one size model for foundational supports is quite a dystopian objective, will be interesting to see how the engagement processes occur over the course of these reforms.

China Ends International Adoption Program: Implications for Abandoned Children and U.S. Families China has officially ended its international adoption program, which began in the 1990s. This decision, aimed at addressing the country’s declining birthrate, allows only exceptions for relatives adopting children. The move has left hundreds of U.S. families in the middle of the adoption process uncertain about the future. Since 1992, over 160,000 Chinese children have been adopted worldwide, with about half going to the U.S. Adoptions had already slowed due to China’s efforts to boost its birthrate and pandemic restrictions. Reasons Behind China’s Decision to End International Adoption China’s decision is largely driven by its demographic crisis. With a declining birthrate and an aging population, the government hopes to retain children to strengthen the future workforce. Economic growth and improved social safety nets have lessened the need for foreign adoption. Nationalism is another significant factor—China seeks to project an image of self-reliance, demonstrating that it can care for its vulnerable citizens without international help. Ending foreign adoptions reflects a broader effort to bolster China’s image as a self-sufficient and powerful nation. Negative Impacts of the Decision This decision negatively impacts all abandoned children, not just those with disabilities. Both healthy and disabled children face fewer adoption opportunities, as domestic families are often reluctant to adopt due to financial and cultural reasons. U.S. families had been providing these children with homes, medical care, and supportive environments. Without international adoption, many of these children will remain in under-resourced orphanages, facing inadequate care, social isolation, and fewer chances for development. The decision could overwhelm China’s welfare system, leaving these children without the family life and support they once found abroad. While China’s efforts to strengthen domestic care are commendable, the potential harm to abandoned children should not be ignored. #ChinaAdoption #InternationalAdoption #ChildWelfare #AdoptionProcess #FamilySupport #GlobalAdoption #OrphanCare #DisabledChildren #AdoptDontShop #AdoptionCrisis #ChildrensRights #GlobalFamilies #AdoptionPolicy #DomesticAdoption #ChildProtection #AdoptionNews #WelfareSystem #AdoptiveFamilies #AdoptionImpact #ChinaPolicy

Inspire Better Welcoming the release of the Multicultural Framework Review report Towards Fairness – A Multicultural Australia for all, Faye Spiteri OAM, CEO, Fronditha Care, spoke to Australian Ageing Agenda about the importance of the review and significance of Recommendation 24. The recommendation for the establishment of a dedicated Multicultural Aged Care Unit within the Department of Health and Aged Care to engage and collaborate with multicultural communities to develop a robust, dynamic approach to culturally sensitive aged care was based on Fronditha Care’s submission which called for a nuanced approach for supporting elders from diverse communities. "It is crucial to address the concerns and challenges related to the inclusion of older people from diverse cultural backgrounds and how their care needs and overall wellbeing are being supported as they age," she said. "In our submission, we advocated for a robust and dynamic approach to ensure all older Australians, regardless of their background, have access to culturally appropriate and inclusive aged care.” You can read more about her response to the release of the review on the link below. #InspireBetter #FrondithaCare #MulticulturalFramework #agedcare
