Media consumption doesn’t have to be zero sum, but it is about choice. It’s tempting for the industry to create a 'winner takes all' narrative. Whether it's linear TV, streaming services, or social media, the conversation tends to focus on which one is leading the race. There seems to be an ‘in or out’ mentality to linear tv. I think it’s the wrong way to look at it. It's not just about replacing old media formats with new ones. It's about diversification without saturation. It’s not about replacing linear scale broadcast. I passionately believe you need to give audiences alternatives and a different ways of consuming content. That’s where the biggest opportunity for production, broadcasters and brands lies. #content #broadcast #streaming

The new issue features insight into the top 30 apps by Household Reach, where Netflix and YouTube maintained their spots at the top of the list for January 2024. The Signal also includes the Monthly CTV Movies Power Score. Based on attention and audience engagement, "Lift" from Netflix tops the list. Viewers are spending more time watching episodic TV than movies on CTV and continue to spend more time with streaming than broadcast or cable. Do you have friends who work in media houses? Ask them how the balance sheet is standing for the last 2 years. Most broadcasters are reporting losses, such as Multichoice and Nation Media Group, to mention a few. This isn't because they have bad content but due to evolving consumer habits from the audiences. At the moment, there are so many streaming platforms with lots of choices; for example, Netflix has over 15,000 titles and is continuously growing. Combined, the streaming platforms offer about 300,000 titles, including non-popular platforms in Africa like Swahilflex. The boardrooms in media houses are now contemplating opening their own platforms where they will apply Video on Demand as a new revenue source. This won't come cheap because acquiring or producing content isn't inexpensive, but over time, it will generate revenue.
