NGFA led members of the Agricultural Transportation Working Group in asking Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to maintain railroad operations to “prevent serious damage to the Canadian and U.S. economies.” The Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) recently cleared the way for a potential rail strike that could begin as soon as Aug. 22. NGFA urged the Canadian government to prevent a rail strike or lockout as it would lead to shutdowns of rail-dependent facilities, “resulting in harmful consequences for Canadian and American agricultural producers, the industry, and both domestic and global food security." https://lnkd.in/eWWjTxst #agriculture #agribusiness #rail #railroads #railstrike

A big impact for many people & sectors in Canada, including agriculture.

A rail strike will have catastrophic impact on Canadian farmers who are just beginning harvest. Not only will we not be able to move this year’s crop, more damage will be done to our reputation as a reliable exporter. Just as devastating as the impact on farmers and the Canadian agriculture sector, all Canadians will be severely impacted because goods vital for safe drinking water and food security won’t be transported. The impact on so many jobs and the entire economy will cost Canadians billions. The federal government can avert this by forcing binding arbitration. Canada’s Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon must act now! #CdnAg #PolicyMatters

🚨 Canadian Railroad Strike Alert: Impacts on US Agriculture 🚨 Earlier today, the Canadian Pacific Kansas City and Canadian National railroads locked out employees represented by the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, halting rail traffic throughout Canada and sparking serious concerns across multiple industries, including food and agriculture. What is the impact for US feeders and growers? Ever.Ag’s Jake Kingsley and Natalie McCarty weigh in. ▪️Timing: The lockout comes at a critical time as harvest season begins, disrupting the flow of feed ingredients, fertilizers and food products essential to agriculture. ▪️Impact on Operations: For every day of work stoppage, it could take 3-5 days for railroads to recover. Delays could stretch into weeks or even months. ▪️Storage and Production Risks: Limited storage at agriculture facilities may lead to production slowdowns, with grain potentially stored on farms or in piles until the situation resolves. ▪️Market Disruptions: The backlog could complicate contract execution and impact grain market pricing as the supply chain adjusts. ▪️Recovery Challenges: Once resolved, prioritizing rail shipments and returning empty cars will add further complications to an already strained system. A rail strike could devastate Canadian farmers and impact global food security. Let's work together to ensure uninterrupted service. Urge the government to #StopTheStrike! Sask Wheat is calling on the Government of Canada to utilize all available tools to prevent a service disruption from both major Canadian railways, CN and CPKC. Without access to CN and CPKC rail service, Western Canada’s grain marketing system will simply come to a halt. If the rail service disruption is at all lengthy, existing contractual obligations with Canada’s international grain customers will not be met and new sales will be forgone. The immediate damage will be widespread across the Canadian economy. Read Sask Wheat's letter to the minister: https://lnkd.in/gYdKXHSe Write a letter to the minister: https://stopthestrike.ca/

Agriculture, Forestry, Chemicals, fuels, consumables- there isn’t a thing that won’t get impacted due to this potential strike. It appears that while government wants to encourage solutions, it is relying on deadline diplomacy to achieve this outcome. For most businesses, that is quite late as they are in containment mode now vs hopeful on resolution. Government, Unions and railways need to end this uncertainty now through objective actions. Canadians are watching. #railstrike #safetransport CN CPKC Government of Canada Justin Trudeau Teamsters Canada

Canadian agriculture is the backbone of our economy. The CN and CPKC lockout is paralyzing our sector and threatening our global reputation. It's time for the federal government to put an end to this and #StopTheLockout Sask Wheat is calling on the Government of Canada to immediately enact binding arbitration to end the dual work stoppage at CN and CPKC. Saskatchewan farmers are captive to rail to move their grain to export position, and do not have the option of using other transportation methods during a service disruption. As an additional 5,000 trucks would be needed to move approximately 200,000 tonnes of wheat and durum per week, there are simply not enough trucks to fill this demand and Saskatchewan’s distance from shipping locations would make it cost prohibitive. In #recentnews, as summer ends for the 2024 marine shipping season on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, a theme within the statistical reporting has emerged this year: agricultural commodities and steel are leading the way ⚓️ Ports are key conduits for moving these and many other vital commodities, and they have met that responsibility with ongoing development and innovation. A good example is the Port of Duluth-Superior, which is the Great Lakes’ largest port by tonnage. Read: https://heyor.ca/DG34RC 📸: Duluth Seaway Port Authority

🔍 #Budget Analysis I Grain Freight and Supply Chains ➡️ $1.7 billion in 2033–34 to continue existing road maintenance and safety programs, including: – $1.0 billion for the Roads to Recovery Program – $200.0 million for the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program – $150.0 million for the Black Spot Program While GrainGrowers welcomes the additional funding committed in the forward estimates for local roads, this additional funding is urgently required now and rather than in 4 years. GrainGrowers' recent ‘Connecting the Dots: Improving Australian Grain Supply Chain Efficiency’ report highlighted the impact of insufficient funding for local councils for grain freight. 📖 Connecting the Dots report : https://ggl.pub/4bSMG97 🚚 GrainGrowers' Freight Supply Chain Policy: https://ggl.pub/3WU60yy

Great insight from our ATB Economics team on the Rail Strike. Large impact. Check out the numbers. Agriculture is a primary rail user: 94% of Canadian grain moves by rail, according to the Grain Growers of Canada. The timing of the stoppage is particularly problematic due to it being harvest season #teamatb #albertaeconomy #abgrain #railstrike
